Yale Class of 2018 SCEA Discussion thread

Also, if you look at the past results thread, you’ll see that of those who posted on CC, only about 1/2 of accepted persons were offered an interview.

Thanks, silogram. If true… not being contacted for an interview “could” be a very strong indicator - one way or the other… :)

@Lepops and WWWard: being contacted and interviewed or NOT being contacted and interviewed is an indication of NOTHING. NOTHING AT ALL. NADA. ZIP.

Yale wants to interview everyone – zero chancers and shoo-ins alike.

Please read the following:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/804985-alumni-campus-interview-faq.html

We’ve all read the Yale website and the testimonials. We are aware there are those who were not interviewed who were admitted and those interviewed who were deferred or denied. We have even been ALL CAPPED by those who know nothing. What we still do not know is whether applications are screened prior to being granted an interview, whether being granted an interview connotes favored status and whether the admission rate for those granted interviews is higher than the general SCEA pool.

The names of all applicants are sent to ASC in a given area, with no info on the qualifications of any applicants. The local ASC coordinator distributes the applicants among the alum interviewers who then make the arrangement for the interviews.

Being interviewed or not has no relationship to the status of the applicants.

LePops: I’ve interviewed +200 students for Yale for over 25 years. Trust me. The contacts are NOT screened beforehand. As soon as an applicant’s file is completed and logged in, his/her info is immediately forwarded to the volunteers.

Like I said, both the zero chancers and the shoo-ins are targeted for interviews. There’s just no time to pre-sort them.

I rec’d three contacts before November 1. And two since Nov 1.

As for trying to tease out any pattern – any pool with over 93% reject rate is going to skew things

Thanks. We will just remain hopeful that my D is afforded the opportunity to interview or that the assigned or available alums in our area have the chance to interview her. Her Brown interview went very well and lasted almost 2 hours. Ironically, he told her that she was his first interview and that Brown wanted the interview concluded by the end of November. This struck us as odd, since she is an RD applicant to Brown. She even went back to the CA website to make sure it was not listed as ED by mistake. But as Yale is her top choice, she would clearly like to interview with them as well… if at all possible.

still haven’t received an eli account or confirmation from yale yet…submitted 11/03…beginning to worry since results come out in less than four weeks and it’s been over two weeks since i submitted. should i send them an email or wait until three weeks have passed since they say your pin number is emailed to you within three weeks of your submission?

blahblaher: In my D’s case, she submitted her application 8/24… then Yale downloaded the file from CA on 10/15 and sent her the Eli account info on 10/21. They thus contacted her 6 days after downloading the complete file. With all of the late submissions near the SCEA deadline, I would suggest allowing them at least double that time… or 12 days after downloading of the ComAp… before following-up. Can you tell if/when they actually downloaded it from CA? You can tell by looking under “Assign Recommenders” for Yale at CA…

WWWard: according to CA, they were downloaded 11/4

Well then I would have expected your initial confirmation email with Eli account info by now, but if you allow for their 3 week time period, that could push things out to 11/25. I would likely wait then until next Monday, contacting them then if they have not contacted you sooner. Good Luck.

WWW: when I was applying (shortly after the earth’s mantle cooled) Brown was the only Ivy NOT to interview me! It just goes to show the mecurial nature of it all. Good luck to the parents guiding their students on this thread

T26E4: Thanks. And in my day, Yale was the only school not to interview me. Of course, I also on got wait-listed at Yale and ended up going to Johns Hopkins. Yes… we never truly know what any of these steps or indicators might mean…

Back in the day Brown accepted me even w/o the interview – so you’re right. Who knows?

Like I said above, for our large metro area, it’s first in, first out. We get a load of EA applicants in early Nov – we try to power them out – but some don’t get contacted – just due to applicants > # interviewer slots.

If these kids are deferred to RD, then we try to interview them in the post EA round. Once about the 1st week of Jan hits, then the huge # of RD names floods us. And we scramble as much as possible for Jan, Feb and early March. Our area used to touch +95% of area applicants. In the last 5-6 years, that rate has been swamped and the growth in apps has overwhelmed our volunteers. We accept it and try to increase our workload but the # of no-interviews has gone up precipitously.

BTW: when I said “first in, first out” that means the appicant’s file is complete – often this isn’t dependent on when the kid submits – but when all the accompanying material gets filed – often this is outside the control of the applicant. Just because the kid applies on Oct 15 doesn’t mean her file is considered complete. If a school report rolls in on Nov 10, that’s when that file is ready. Conversely, another applicant whose entire file is submitted on Nov 5th, will get his name forwarded for possible interview faster than the Oct 15 candidate.

Thanks, T26E4. We appreciate you providing a greater explanation. And what is your geographic area?

So it’s 11/19 and my d’s recs are still not marked as received on the Eli Acct. They were “downloaded” on the Common App on 10/28 but Yale could not access them due to Common App issues. The HS emailed the recs 5 days ago but there is no evidence that they have them. Is this a concern? Is it possible that she will be deferred simply because she doesn’t have a complete file? She already has an interview scheduled.

Per Yale… if it was sent to them more than ten days ago and it is still not reflected, you may ask that a copy be faxed to Yale using the fax number 203-777-6120.

You could thus have the HS or individual teachers fax them as well just to be sure. But you may want to wait 5 more days first. I would allow them the full 10 days.

10 days since it was emailed? Sounds like it will be December before Yale has all of the completed applications – they won’t have much time to make the decisions.

Ask them to Fax now then. With all of the issues attributed to the Common Application this year, I doubt that they will hold it against any applicant if they end up with duplicate submissions of key elements. And it is best to know for sure that they have a completed file in time. Good Luck…

Eli acct was updated- recs received. I guess it just took time for them to update it.
