Yale Class of 2018 SCEA Discussion thread

Congrats. And good luck…

Benley posted a link to a Yale Daily News article last night on a new thread. It details a 5.6% increase in SCEA applicants at Yale this year.

The key info… Yale accepted 649 students last year from its early applicant pool, yielding a 14.4 percent acceptance rate for the class of 2017. Out of the 4,514 early applications, 2,529 students were deferred and 1,302 were rejected. And for this year… the SCEA pool now includes 4,768 applicants.

My D is one of them. Good luck to all…

What do you think caused the increase?

This may have already been answered but…

Have they released a concrete date when applicants will be notified of their admission decision? Their website only indicates “mid-December”.

Per Yale, the decisions are set to be released Dec 17th… at 5pm EST… online.

The YDN article suggests that Penn and Dartmouth saw increases of 6.6 percent and 6.7 percent. The rest of the Ivies have not officially pronounced their #s (per the article)… but I saw elsewhere that Brown was up too. It looks to just be a general trend of increased applications Early to all Ivies. It likely means that the total # will be up for total applications (including RD) this cycle.

So only about 649 more hours to wait… lol. Good Luck to all applicants… both in terms of patience and the final decision.

26 days! good luck everyone! :)

Are likely letters ever given out before the SCEA results are sent out?

^Go to the Resources sticky thread at the top of this forum, there’s a link to a thread about likely letters there.

I’m so nervous! :(

Got contacted for my interview! So nervous…

And the guy seems to be straight out of Yale college. Does anyone have anyone advice pertaining to interviews with younger alumni? I’m guessing the convo should be more pleasant and less formal due to the lesser age gap. My friend had his chat with a tenured college professor and he said that it was a bit awkward at the very least.

Also, my transcript just got received. Do you think that they’ve looked through my application or had set it aside until that one document came in?

25 days :)

Dream big… hope for the best… but also have a back-up plan.

The Princeton Review offers the following advice: “Apply to a few schools from each category (many applicants apply to around three reach schools, three match schools and two safety schools). Separating them will help you manage your expectations throughout the admissions process. And it will ensure that you set ambitious goals and give yourself some back–up options.”

There are various studies online which reflect that 58-76% of all college applicants actually succeed in getting accepted to their top choice school (depending on the study). That # seems very high, but again it includes all applicants. I would have to conclude that the #s would be much lower for applicants to the Ivies or similar elite colleges.

I have also read though that 93% of all prospective college students end up attending one of their top three choices. The key thing I believe is to leave yourself options. 14% of last year’s SCEA applicants received the decision they were seeking in mid-December 2012. Good luck to all of this year’s 4768 SCEA applicants… maybe you too can share that happy fate on December 17th this year.

I’d advise not entering the interview with too many generalizations. Personality, not age, can make more of a difference in how pleasant or formal a conversation is.

Adcoms don’t spend time reading applications that may or may not eventually be complete.

Just to verify, no “Mid-year report” is required for SCEA, right? So the “X” listed there is what should be on the Eli Accounts?

mid year report is sent after the first semester…so not required for SCEA until after december usually

So I know it is a little premature to ask this but… What does it take for a college to rescind an offer of admission?

Per Yale… “Should it be determined at any time that any credential or other information submitted during the application process has been misrepresented, the University reserves the right to rescind the offer of admission and to prevent registration.”

I would also suspect that a major decline in your final semester’s grades or an incident that reflects poorly on your character, etc. could be grounds for Yale to rescind its offer.

"What does it take for a college to rescind an offer of admission? " Probably on the top ten list of most often asked questions on CC. A simple search will garner you the answer.

Basically: Ds, Fs, Fraud or Felonies

My D has posed a question… if not Yale, what are your top alternative choices?

Her’s are: Brown, Princeton, Columbia and Duke
