Yale Class of 2018 SCEA Discussion thread

T26E4, thanks!

American students who are African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American. URM does not apply to non-citizens

Is there a difference in disadvantage between asian female and asian male? Iā€™m surprised there is one between white male and white female.

Marioandluigi: It likely depends on if it is a category that they are trying to keep track of specifically or not, for whatever reason. For example, it does help to be from Idaho or Alaska versus a more populated stateā€¦ as they want to be able to say that they have students admitted from all 50 states. And they do track certain ethnic categories, but if a specific ethnicity falls into a broader category, then it is likely already being accounted for already. I have heard of all kinds of tactics thoughā€¦ from pursuing the least popular majors to claiming the practice of an obscure faith. I prefer and recommend the straightforward and honest approach. Apply honestly in every way and simply hope for the best. Ultimately there should be a match made between you and the right quality school.

SpoolMan: From what I have heard and read, all Asian candidates are now disadvantaged, simply due to the overall # of qualified candidates. But if you go to CollegeBoard or similar websites, it is possible to specifically identify the demographic make-up of most elite schools. And then it is further possible to target the schools that have the lowest percentage of Asians in attendance. That could allow a candidate to choose to compete in a slightly less discriminatory environment.

And yesā€¦ in the past few years many articles have been written describing the plight of the unhooked white female applicant. They claim that that this category of applicant is the biggest loser in the admissions process in recent years. These are, as you might expect, those Caucasian female students with really good grades and solid test scores, but with no other distinguishing hook to set them apart from the sea of high achieving female students. It accurately describes my daughter, unfortunately.

I am an asian female so Iā€™ve known about this unfortunate circumstance for a while. I wish it didnā€™t have to be this way, but I understand why it is.

Maybe this info can help a littleā€¦ Percentage of Student Body who are Asian: Yale 16%, Duke 21%, Brown 12%, Columbia 20%, Dartmouth 14%, Northwestern 19%, Princeton 19%, Stanford 19%, UChicago 18%, Penn 19%, USC 23%.

So maybe consider applying to Brown and Dartmouth.

7 days 11 hours until the 16th! :)

Iā€™m really nervous/excited right now- I canā€™t believe that this time Monday next week weā€™ll finally know!
Iā€™m hoping that being a female, URM, STEM applicant may boost my application, at least a littleā€¦ Hereā€™s to hoping most of us will be smiling when the results come out!

Iā€™m a female STEM applicant too :slight_smile: but not a URM, iā€™m Indian lulz

How are you guys gonna react if you get in?
Streaking?

probably cry at the unlikelihood of it

@awesomenerd

Did you do anything specific activity wise that pertains to STEM? Or is it a general interest for you?

@yalehacker

I have done specific STEM activities but I also have interest in it

@eric

Funny you should mention that. At Yale, it is a yearly tradition to streak in the libraries during midterms and throw out candy at people studying to ease the tensionā€” that is, for males it is. Not females lol ;)

As a white female, does applying for engineering and having done STEM related activities give any sort of edge?

cutiedida: Hopefullyā€¦ if they are actively pursuing such candidates.

^ guess we can only wait for these last 7 days and hope so :)

This is all so unbelievably ā€˜crayā€™; Iā€™ll be getting my first college decision within a week. :D

Same. It is definitely ā€œcrayā€ hahahaha. I donā€™t know how Iā€™m going to get through school

lol i still have ACT the weekend b4
