Yale Class of 2018 SCEA Discussion thread

^ do not be nervous, they got it. They usually do not respond but will still update it. I was in the same predicament as you and they told me that they had updated my file even though they had not responded.

Actually, I did the very same thing as you two and they notified me within 24 hours of receipt that they would add it to consideration. Maybe it was lost in spam?

not necessarily. The admissions office replied to me very quickly but the officer did not reply until I inquired if they had indeed received it

I should have also noted that itā€™s generally more difficult to get into yale than harvard for my school. The acceptance rates are about 20% and 35%, respectively. Why did I have to like yale more? :(

Those are very impressive acceptance rates to Ivies from a single high school. Hopefully the universities then also keep track of how well admitted students do there once they are enrolled and actually taking coursesā€¦ so that they can project forward when considering future applicants from the same schoolā€¦ i.e. seeing how scores/grades of HS students translate moving forward into college.

It must be hard for a college to predict such though for a HS that has not seen students admitted to elite schools thus far thoughā€¦ and then it is really unfair to well-qualified students from such an unknown HS who may not be viewed the same way as if they were coming from a traditional feeder HS.

My school is private, and it is more difficult to get into than half of the ivies in the first place (in fact, itā€™s needs blind, so weā€™re not just a bunch of trust fund kids). They work us very hard. Throughout most of Upper (junior) and Senior year, we get less than 5 hours of sleep per night (thatā€™s an average student).

In short, the kids admitted are some of the most hard working people who youā€™ll ever find. Our average SAT to Harvard and Yale (according to Naviance) is around a 2300, so, like I said, these people are extremely qualified. We pretty much take all AP classes from freshman year onward. The saying, ā€œUpper year at [Blank] is the hardest thing youā€™ll ever do,ā€ rings true at least until grad school.

Also, I thought the same thing as WWWard two years ago. So, I applied, got a full ride, and here I am. Thatā€™s the best thing about needs blind admissions; youā€™re really with some great students.

And also, Iā€™m sorry if I came across as combative. As I said before, we work really, really hard here and we have to sacrifice an awful lot (being so far away from home among other things). It just sometimes upsets me when people imply that we get more than we deserve.

And, this isnā€™t to say that I even have a shot at Yale. Iā€™m fully expecting a deferral come monday!

Good luck. Hopefully the hard work will be rewarded.

Only 141 more hours to goā€¦

My daughterā€™s ready for a deferral but not sure that sheā€™s prepared to be rejected early. I know Iā€™m not prepared for that!

Iā€™ve been browsing for a solid year or two now and I thought that I would finally post.

I found the conversation about the schools interesting. I come from a really small school like the poster above. No urban area for over 200+ miles. No one at my school has ever gone to an ivy, much less a top 200+ school. I feel like Iā€™m at such a disadvantage compared to a lot of you guys. My SAT is <2000 (and the highest my school has ever seen.) We have two APā€™s (which I have aced) but itā€™s so discouraging.
Iā€™m not really expecting much come Monday, but hoping for the best!

Good luck everyone!

letā€™s all hope for the best :)

@ellacherie Iā€™m basically on the same boat as you except I am not in an isolated area. Itā€™s definitely discouraging to hear about the competition but context is everything. Iā€™m the first to ever apply from my school. Good luck and feel free to PM me if you want!

Iā€™m the first to apply from my school too
I know what you mean, itā€™s rough. For some of my friends, the acceptances have started. Itā€™s hard to be one of the last ones.
Same goes for you! PM me anytime, itā€™s nice to know that someone else is going through the same thing.
The waiting has gotten unbearable this past week, Iā€™m strangely okay with all the school work in hopes that itā€™ll keep me busy. Monday seems so far away.

Someone in the harvard group stole my eyelash joke. Theyā€™re so unoriginal.

The greater annoyance is that the wait will immediately resume for 83-86% of all SCEA applicants, prolonging the agony of ā€œnot knowingā€ until late March or early April. With only 2 safeties announcing by Dec 16th, my D may have to apply to some schools with rolling admissions just to break up the monotony. The gap from mid-Dec to April 1 is just too long for those not being accepted early.

What other schools have already announced?

Caltech already sent out acceptance letters (to the excitement of some at my school). NYU and Columbia are coming up soon, followed closely by MIT on 12/14.

My nerves are starting to calm down, but I am becoming complacent XD. It is becoming hard to work on other supplements when closure (or pseudo-closure in the form of a deferral) is only a few days away.

none reallyā€¦UF announces on feb 14th, MIT announces around 3/14/14, and ivies announce in late march

I wonder why UF is that slow. FSU announces 12/16. Maybe they do it in 2 stages, based on when you apply?

WashU ED was announced yesterday.

I agree on the struggling to work on other apps at this point. I have first drafts on most colleges so I think Iā€™m going to relax for a few days.
