Yale Class of 2018 SCEA Discussion thread

Does anyone know if being from Connecticut gives students some sort of advantage in Yale admissions?

^I would say no
but who knows for sure?

Seeing all my early decision friends getting into Columbia etc. gives me a really strange feeling.

When you look at the various EA and ED results threads for this year so far and even at the Yale SCEA results thread from last year, it certainly seems like a huge # of applicants with amazing stats and credentials have been rejected or deferred. But the postings really do not reflect the type of things that Yale says it is truly searching for.

If you scan the info that Yale itself provides via this link:

[What Yale Looks For | Yale College Admissions](What Yale Looks For | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions)

then it does seem to create an approach to admissions that can not be easily deciphered by looking at stats, ECs, etc. alone. I have to believe that an analysis of what your school had to offer and how you approached it + your essays + recommendations have to be the primary catalysts in how they come to view you.

Yale receives likely at least three times as many applicants with the stats they are looking to see as the # of applicants they can realistically accept each year. So whether you call it holism are whatever, the deciding factor seems to come from all the factors not really listed among theses results threads. And hopefully that is where my D and many of you will be able to differentiate yourselves

I have to admit that knowing a lot of my close friends received acceptance letters today has raised the pressure that is looming over Monday.

Is there any way decisions come out tomorrow? I know they’ve officially announced Monday, but are they really going to be changing decisions over the weekend?? So anxiety-producing. Can’t wait til Monday.

WWWard, like I said, we are told this by our councilors every day: we all have the stats, but they can only get us so far. The truth is, once you pass Yale’s threshold, they are looking for leadership qualities. Will you positively impact the world one day? How will you lead your generation? What have you done thus far that conveys the necessary traits?

A 2350/4.0 student who writes about curing world hunger or his/her 11th grade philosophical realization will get rejected 9/10 times. They are looking for truly exceptional candidates who have already proved that they can, and will, impact the world.

newperspective- When did they say Friday??

Sorry I’m tired
I meant I knew they said MONDAY

And at this moment, the Yale website still says: Decisions will be available on our website the evening of Monday, December 16.

Are they the last of the elite schools to announce or is there someone out there doing it later?

@WWWard, Princeton and Penn are also on Monday.

@SpoolMan being from Connecticut does not help unless you’ve grown up in the ghetto of New Haven or something. In general it actually hurts–a lot of of qualified candidates apply from Connecticut and the school wants geographic diversity. I’m from CT and I know many other SCEAers from here as well. I saw a stat a while back that showed the acceptance rate for CT residents was actually significantly higher than that of other states, but this is assuredly due to the large quantity of legacy applicants and things like children of Yale employees, etc.

Anxious about this like the rest of you guys; best of luck to us all! Might I suggest creating a college-results-soundtrack (playlist for Accept/Reject/Defer scenario), for all you fellow music lovers out there? Takes your mind off of things, as listening to good music should :)

@Jazzed Interesting, that’s what I thought also. I was just wondering because usually being from home state gives you an advantage, but I wasn’t sure if it was the case for ivy leagues.

Where does it actually say 5pm? I’ve heard 5pm but haven’t actually seen it anywhere.

SpoolMan: I think that is based on prior years
but I am sure most applicants will start checking periodically even earlier :)

@WWWard Thanks! Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything

If i live on the west coast and results come out 5pm EST, does that mean I can check at 2pm?

yes you will be able to

ok thanks!
