Yale Class of 2020 applicants

Ahh! Your making me scared!!

I had my alumni interview last year, and it was very much as @Tperry1982 has described. We met at a Starbucks-like place, he bought me a drink, and we chatted for an hour or so. Part of the time I was asked about my interests and “Why Yale,” part of the time I asked him questions about his interests and Yale experiences, and much of the time we chatted about music and travel and just let the conversation flow naturally. I sent him a thank you email that night. It was my favorite college interview and as a first year student, I have found that Yale really goes the extra mile to value its applicants and students . Good luck to you all, Yale is a great place!

I had my interview yesterday. For those of you that are looking for advice, I would say the most important thing is TAKE YOUR TIME, DON’T RUSH. THINK BEFORE YOU ANSWER. My biggest regret following the interview is glossing over key details, about my extracurricular activities, for example, because I was nervous. So please, just make sure you’re taking your time answering questions. Be sincere.

Can someone answer @mytosies question? I know interview reports are due Dec 1 - does that mean we should be contacted around Nov 22 if we have any hope of getting an interview?

I also haven’t been contacted. I don’t know if this is because my scores for both the SAT and ACT (thanks a lot collegeboard/ACT) haven’t been sent yet because of delays. By when should we start to be worried?

TPerry1982, Will a RD applicant whose file is complete wait for interviewing until the SCEA round is over or be interviewed in this season?

@werewolf2016 Your scores have absolutely NOTHING to do with your being contacted or not. 100% guaranteed
@archersbow It would be EXTREMELY unusual for you to get a call before the first few weeks of December – there’re simply too many EA interviews to finish. They have a December deadline – yours is early March. I’m sure you understand.

@T26E4 I don’t mean to harass or repeat my question, but when would you say is about the latest I would be asked for an interview if I were to receive one? I’m just curious because I know there is no dearth of Yale graduates in my area, and while I know it’s random, I’d just really like an interview… while it may not disadvantage me to NOT have one, I feel like it advantages those who do, and so I’m at a disadvantage as a result anyway. I apologize for my agonizing

Your name simply could be in a volunteer’s unopened email. I really don’t know what to say. Each year, our area has a very small handful of EA applicants that don’t get interviewed for one reason or another. Sorry the wait is so tough…

@mytosies I can relate with you :)) I think I’m in an unrepresented area, however.

Don’t want to cut the interview subject loose, but I’m still wondering about how the November SAT/SAT subject tests play into early admissions. Sure they’ll look at it, but by the time scores become available wouldn’t they have made at least half of the decisions? And I don’t think that a score boost of, say, 740 -> 780 will turn a deferral/rejection into an acceptance.

@ccstudent101, it probably is a bigger concern for those applicants whose only test was then. I imagine that number is small, but internationals and students with complicated schedules might not have had many other opportunities. My personal belief is that retesting, barring illness or similar during the first test, is overrated; I know that others disagree.

We were part of the Common App snafu two years ago. We pushed hard this time to overcome our kid’s age-appropriate procrastination :))

@T26E4 I’m sorry to bother you  thanks for your answer - I understand that you can’t really say anything to my area, but I appreciate the response

Hey guys, is anyone aware of the presence of alumni in Romania/Eastern Euorope? Also, has anyone recieved a Skype interview so far? I would reaaally like an interview, but I think it’s highly unlikely I get one, at least face-to-face, due to my location.

@an1620 As far as I’m concerned, people from Eastern Europe (at least from the CIS; since I’m from Russia, I, of course, can’t speak for the entire Eastern Europe) don’t get Skype interviews often because of the time difference and don’t get the face-to-face ones because of the lack of alumni in the area. So I doubt we’re going to get interviews, at least in the Early Action round. But I may be wrong

I had my interview on Wednesday I was so nervous at first but she really just put me at ease. I live just outside NYC and she grew up there so we had a lot to talk about. Good luck everyone else!

Also to clarify I meant to type lived as in past tense just outside NYC, as I mentioned earlier I currently live outside Boston. Only clarifying because I mentioned living near boston in a previous post and I’ve noticed that if people think you’re lying here they can be vicious…

After reading this thread for a little while, I find myself in need of advice. My daughter was contacted by email for an interview last week. Unfortunately,y she was very sick for a couple days and did not respond until Saturday. She never heard back from the alum.
I suggested that she send a followup email in case the first one did not go through. She did yesterday; but we still have not heard anything back.

Any suggestions as to how to proceed? I think it is safe to say that we live in an “underrepresented” area of the states and were surprised to get the initial interview invite. Now we are not sure what to do…

International student

@Freida2 - did the interviewer leave a phone number? It just might be that the interviewer got busy. Since they contacted her the first time, they most surely will respond. Honestly, most of us work and I know that sometimes I can intend to contact my interviewee for days but never get around to it. They are not due until December 1 so you have some time. It will work out.
