So I had my interview today and it wasn’t what I was expecting at all. The entire setting was extremely formal and programmed in such a way that I ran into at least a dozen other applicants…some of whom were dressed in suits. My interviewer was cold and offhandish, and we did not connect at all. I tried a few jokes, he sat stone-faced. He smiled maybe once, almost imperceptibly, when he talked about the colleges. I thought the interview would be where I could showcase my bright personality…but all he wanted were hard facts. He even recorded the conversation, but only took one paragraph to jot down things I said. Quite disappointed how it turned out, actually.
What intended majors did you guys put? I did political science.
I don’t get why some interviewers are so harsh. I think every interviewer should be kind and heartwarming to every applicant, so the applicant gets his/her best side out.
@johnnyisgod I did Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. My dream major. I’d probably double major with Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology.
@strideforward same! Except my double would be in either English or Computer Science. To be honest, though, I’m beginning to think I’m 100% going to rejected so maybe I shouldn’t be getting so excited about this
i tend to agree, and I think that the overwhelming majority of interviews go smoothly and with good feeling. But, interviewers and interviewees are human, and sometimes someone had a bad day, sometimes the chemistry is a mismatch, and sometimes the interviewer is a novice, albeit well intentioned, and has not yet developed interviewer skills. Remember too that reports on CC are generally from one side of the table.
do interviews only become significant if you do very well/poorly on them?
Am I the only one who was interviewed by a Yale student? I actually visited Yale on a campus tour, and the university offered me an interview since I came from abroad(this was way before early decision, so Yale probably didn’t know who I was then, so no chance of them having chosen me because of my application). Was my interview some kind of exception? Or was it a different kind of interview?
Then again, I live in a place that’s unlikely to have alumni so maybe it’s because of that…
Jenni7298, DS also had an interview with a student, a senior, when he was on campus as part of YYGS some years back. It’s not unusual. Good luck.
@IxnayBob Thanks!
@mytosies Trust me I am feeling the same way! But don’t get discouraged. There’s a 14% statistical chance of being accepted early action. Don’t lose faith; you never know!
@lh7636 I remember reading one of these forums and an experienced Yale Interviewer basically said that interviewers rank you on a scale of 1-9. 1 being terrible, 9 being incredible. Most interviewees get a 5, which is “a solid application in the Yale pool.” That interviewer said that he gives out an occasional 7 and an occasional 3. 9 is a 1/100 occurrence in the Yale pool. But then he went on to say that a solid interview that’s not terrible or incredible won’t really affect you. A bad interview will make the admissions team think twice about your application, especially if they considered you a very viable candidate, in which they will then reconsider. A great interview, by the same token, will give you the little extra push you need to make it over the hill and into the admit pile.
@johnnyisgod I did Economics and EALL
Biomedical engineering and computer science
History and theatre
EP&E, Political Science, and Global Affairs. I’d be perfectly content to be a poli sci/philosophy double major tho.
Cognitive science!
I just had my interview and it seemed pretty standard. The interviewer was definitely going by the rules and was pretty bland so I hope she’ll just give me a solid 5. I don’t feel like her report will affect me in any way.
Anyone please help me on this :((
I’m from Vietnam
Yale alumni (he is in Vietnam) emailed me a week ago and asked for an interview. But since i’m in USA right now, he told me that he would notify Yale about this and somebody would contact me shortly so I can have an interview in Florida. It’s been a week and I haven’t received any email from Yale yet. Do u think I email him again???
@zacle1234 How long are you staying in the U.S?
@zacle1234 Trying to contact your ASC contact is OK.
