I have a couple of questions about computer science at Yale as a prospective student:

How is it doing on being understaffed? I remember an article in early 2013 about the recent strain on the CS department (http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2013/01/29/computer-science-dept-overworked-understaffed/). Has it gotten any better or worse in this academic year?

How is the recruiting scene? I know Yale isn't exactly a big name in computer science. That being said, do top tech companies (Google, Facebook, etc) still come to campus to recruit?

This is an interesting question and I would be curious to hear if you ask the CS department directly. It appears that they had two faculty additions in the past 5 years, one in 2009 and one in 2011 ( <a href=“People | Computer Science”>People | Computer Science; ). The article you posted was published in 2013.

Most companies accept resumes submitted online into their websites even if they do not physically visit a campus.

A little worse imo. They hired a new professor but the major has continued to grow, so the classes are definitely bigger. Most CS electives have about 30-40 kids enrolled, but it used to be 20-30 a few years ago. Not a huge issue though, since they’re lectures so the size doesn’t affect much. If you want to get to know professors, you can still visit them after class or at office hours without any issues.

Facebook does not recruit on campus, but Google/Microsoft/Amazon/etc all do. There’s a job board for postings from a ton of tech companies, but I think most people find internships/jobs by learning about them from friends/upperclassmen. I think the career services people do a good job of getting the big people to come, but for startup jobs you have to put in the effort yourself. That’s true of most places though.

^ lol Facebook doesn’t recruit on campus? They’ve hosted three major recruiting events in the past year that I can remember and had a presence at a lot of other cs events too…

They’ve sponsored other events (hack nights/ hackathons) but I’ve never been to a Facebook tech talk/recruiting event on campus.

Could you possibly argue that it would be easier to get a job/internship from Google if you’re at Yale versus at Stanford? Because it seems like a lot of Stanford students are dead-set on getting into Google, and Google has an over-abundance of Stanford students. Maybe if a Yale student applied to Google, they would consider it refreshing??? Idk, i’m just being crazy.
