@dumspirospero34 - as a Black alumni parent of a sophomore, I will say that Yale is no better or worse than the rest of America (actually may be better than a lot of places) and I tell my child this everyday. I knew what she was going to face while there, it was the same in the 70/80s when I was there. Was it enough to make me want her to go somewhere else? No. Again, she will have to work and live in the real world - Yale is the real world with all its bumps and warts. Still to me the best school that anyone could every go to but students without a support system need to find something to anchor them whether they be Asian, Jewish, LGBTQ, Black or uber conservative.
All right, thank you so much! I really loved hearing your perspectives, and am glad to cross that off from my potential Cons list
I think one of Yale’s cons might be its weak STEM- but they’re pouring lots of money into it and improving it very quickly.
^ I am a current Yale STEM student, and I completely disagree that a con would be STEM.
After reading OP post #1, I had to pop a Prozac.
If Yale is really that terrible, then why is it so competitive?
One would figure that word would get around.
On the other hand, I hear engineers have a sucky life pretty much everywhere else too.
@Nerdyparent … it pays the bills.
And we can assemble the toys on Christmas eve!
One more con they don’t make their admissions decisions more quickly
Its in New England and its cold. Well for some that is a positive. I would have loved it to be transplanted to southern Florida.
New Haven is not a garden spot. A lot of homeless folks or panhandlers in the park right off campus
The campus food is not as good as it has been, even 2 years ago. It seems to be a cost-cutting measure to cook centrally and reheat locally. I love Yale, but one has to question the wisdom of this when Yale has a ~$26 billion endowment. I break even by reducing my contribution to the parent fund to offset the additional off-campus dining expense.
Lol only at Ivy League schools will people complain about the homeless
Then it would too hot.
Admittedly, for some people, the proximity of the “real” world can be shocking. Sadly for some, this doesn’t engender greater sympathy or gratitude for one’s own advantages. Many Yalies spend considerable time in community service to the nearby community however.
But it’s a legitimate question/concern nonetheless which I discuss when speaking w/families about Yale.
^^Yale sponsored community service. Also think of it as part of your education.

There are also many other opportunities not sponsored by Yale.
