yale or harvard????

How to choose?? What are the differences between harvard and yale/what might make harvad better? never ever thought id have to make this choice thanks!

Isn't your mother on the faculty at Yale? Would she allow you to attend Harvard? Are you TRULY weighing the options?

Go to Kent State, its alot more fun :)

Where would you choose to go between harvard and stanford?? I'm from Boston and all my friends will be in the city, my brothers go to Harvard, and the rep is hard to turn down. On the other hand, Stanford is gorgeous, I'd be on the track team, and I'd get a chance to live in California for four years of my life before most likely settling back on the East Coast......what would you guys do?

Nice weather or this constant snow crap. Yeah pick the nice weather place.

do you think I'd be making a mistake going to one or the other in terms of getting the same opportunities when I graduate.

im in the same situation...yale vs harvard, not that you can go wrong at either place but the decision is so hard!! from what i've heard though, yale is much better for undergraduates, but i mean, harvard, it's hard to say no...

Yale has a rep for being better in humanities and H's rep is more for sciences...I have no idea how accurate this is. I do know that Yale's drama program is supposed to be amazing.

If you love city life, H might be better, as it's easier to get to Boston from Harvard than New York from Yale.

Yale is a lot prettier than Harvard, IMO.

Yeah I got the same decision: Harvard, Yale, or Stanford. Does anyone know which would be better for (get ready for multi-part question) a. economics (to prepare for Graduate Business School) b. international relations/studies/history and c. political science

I heard that Yale has good humanities and Stanford good math and science- is this true?

Rather than solicit the views of random and predictable partisans on CC, I suggest you invest $9.95 in the new "2006 USNews Best Graduate Schools" and check the detailed rankings - by informed academics - of the departments at each school in the various disciplines and sub-disciplines.

why the rankings on graduate schools?

Byerly just wants to show how Harvard's graduate programs are better than Yale's (which is definitely true in most cases). To undergraduates, these differences aren't going to mean as much.

They are by no means definitive, but they explain how I made this same decision last year.

Most people choose colleges through one or a combination of the following:
1. Picking schools that have prestige.
2. Picking schools that have committed teaching faculty (i.e. LACs).
3. Picking schools that have strong departments in the field you are interested in pursuing.

visit both for at least a weekend (if its possible) and go where you feel the better fit. You're on an equal playing field coming out of both schools, so why not choose where you'll be happier.

Go to Yale so I'll have more of a chance of getting off Harvard's waitlist!

ditto flipchick! hah...but really, if you haven't already visited the universities, perhaps you should do that; and/or find out which college is better suited to your needs (eg. art major, physics faculty..). Congratulations and good luck :)

For the rest of your life you will feel you made the wrong decision.

personally, i think if you care much about the overall reputation, perhaps u shall choose Harvard. However, if u r interested in fields like law, politics or history, definitely Yale. But don't forget that Harvard is also strong in these above areas. Plus, Harvard is also neighbour of MIT, which is very academic oriented. and another factor toward ur consideration should be the financial assistance(if u r a FA candidate), not only what is provided in the freshman year, but also in the future.

go to the school that will give you more $$$ :D

So many people toss off the words "reputation" and "prestige" as if they are worthless abstractions unrelated to the real world. Usually, these are people trying to dismiss the advantages of Harvard in favor of some other institution.

We see the same cliche rationalizations every year.

IMHO, "reputation" represents the collective judgements of experts, academics and students based on experience - and is THE most critical factor in comparing colleges; "prestige" is nothing more than positive reputation - accumulated and earned over time.

The strongest applicants vote with their feet, and every year more of them march off to Cambridge than to any other destination in the world.
