Yale Essays

Hey guys. I just was wondering about how "strict" the 500 word limit is for Yale's supplemental essay. I know on their site is says that "We ask that you respect the word limit we have set. Will we read the words beyond 500? Yes. But if your essay is much longer than 500 words, you will not have helped yourself by ignoring our request. Remember, concise and simple writing is often the best writing." Does that necessarily mean that the essay shouldn't be more that 500 words? Currently mine is around 550, but I have no idea if that's too far over or not.

On another note, I'm applying as an engineer, and that essay's prompt says to write a "brief" third essay. I'm not sure if that means fewer than 500 words, but I think I ended up writing about 570 for it. Is that OK, or would I need to cut it down a bit? Thanks in advance!

I think you’re fine on both counts

Pandora - I guess it should be fine, I did 570-ish words too. :)

I don’t think they’ll care as long as it’s good, saturated writing.

Mine came to 501 and 396, but I cut as much as I could from both. As long as there’s a point to what you’re writing, I don’t think it’ll matter too much.
