I recently posted a thread about Yale's journalism initiative program, so if anyone has more info about that, I'd appreciate it. Besides that program, how else is Yale a good school for journalism if you major in something like English and polysci...any other opportunites, EC's, the Yale Daily News, classes, internships, etc. I'd love some insight. Thanks!

I believe Stone Phillips was an English major at Yale, and he did pretty well for himself....

My entire "Why Yale" section was about the Yale Journalism Initiative.

Um, I don't know how relevant this is, but my interview was an environmental journalist (he went to the College, then the Forestry School I think?) and wrote for a Pulitzer prize-winning newspaper that was greatly esteemed before a corporate takeover. He covered Chernobyl and is basically awesome.

Nowadays, he doesn't write for that newspaper (I find that very admirable, since the newspaper has totally deteriorated) but he's often in it, since he's a spokesperson for the state's Public Commission.

Okay, that's basically my little rant.

Sweet! You can be Rory Gilmore.

LOL I love Rory Gilmore...I actually think they wrote the character after me. I've been an aspiring journalist and coffee addict (check my screen name!) since I was like 13.

bump......

bump......

Coffee: If you get into Yale, you have to join the Yale Daily News. What other schools did you apply to? Good Luck!

dude, same. i wrote my whole why yale essay on how the yji not only focuses on writing but like starting your own mag/ newspaper, which is what i wanna do. when i went on my interview, the guy was so impressed i had legit reasons for wanting to go to yale beyond "because it's yale."

I applied to J-schools like Northwestern, Mizzou, and NYU, but think I would prefer majoring in something else like English or Polysci and then getting the journalism experience from student newspapers and other publications, things like the Yale journalism initiative, etc. And kellesta, my interviewer also was impressed that I spoke in depth about the YJI. I know enough about that, but was wondering if any students could talk about their experiences w/ student publications, internships, or anything that Yale provided for them as aspiring journalists. I know Yale is AMAZING, but I would like to be as informed as possible in regards to journalism and any writing opportunities there.
