or the gun toten, bible reading conservatives?

i dont carry a gun....and im not religious :D

then you are probly a social darwinist !

quote from my AP Government textbook " people with higher education tend to be more liberal"
I live in a tiny little mountain town where conservatives rule the place. I have not yet met a conservatice who was able to defend their points properly. Instead they just revert to the talking points memo of the republican party. jeez, it sounds like they are all mindless clones enunciating what the great(sarcastic) Rove in the sky tells them.

lol.......

so are any of the ivy league unis more conservative in atmosphere? Which ivy is the most politically conservative? how about any us news top 20 unis? I have been brain washed by a conservative history teacher who hangs pictures of Dubya and Cheney on his walls (cult of personality) for two and a half years, and I have adopted conservatives ideals I'm afraid, so as a result I'd like to inquire the most conservative and libral colleges

"so are any of the ivy league unis more conservative in atmosphere"

Nope.

"Which ivy is the most politically conservative?"

Probably Princeton, but it's still liberal.

"how about any us news top 20 unis?"

Go South, young man. (Again, they're still liberal)

"I have been brain washed by a conservative history teacher who hangs pictures of Dubya and Cheney on his walls (cult of personality) for two and a half years, and I have adopted conservatives ideals I'm afraid, so as a result I'd like to inquire the most conservative and libral colleges"

The entire history department at my high school was liberal as hell

" people with higher education tend to be more liberal"
That's BS becuz the majority of liberals are minorities such as blacks and hispanics. Both of these groups have a lower rate of enrollment in college. Check the stats.

As for the conservatives who cant defend their views....thats becuz the listener has probably failed to even try to see the other side. Trust me, I have NO clue why anyone would be liberal. It doesn't matter anyway, we have 4 MORE YEARS!

you know i cant stop thinking about that quote. That's horrible!

How can you possibly relate someone's beliefs with their intelligence? If being liberal means being smart according to your text book, then I would rather be the biggest moron on the planet.

Aside from that, you know that if you had a successful career person and a bum, you know the bum would be liberal becuz he'd ask the successful person for money without bothering to try to work for it. The successful person would say, "no." Then you'd have some liberal politician make a tax where the successful person would be MADE to give money from their paycheck to the bum. So then the bum would gain free money. IT'S FRICKIN INTELLIGENT!

Lol, don't worry about it, beechbum. Sempitern555 was the one who blasted Princeton then applied to it 2 days later:
*Snobbish Ptons *
So far Pton isnt looking too good in eyes and heres why
- overly snobbish and preppy atmosphere
-dorms suck ie have to up or down a few flight of stairs to go the bathroom+ crowded
-lets face it Pton, NJ is not a typical college town. It is a few streets of gingerbread houses around the campus. Typical suburbia mixed with mid atlantic snobbery - not a good combination. Plus , when you get to the highway there's nothing there. Just a gas station and some low income housing
-rationing of grades is completely unfair and unjust

WAAYYY too conservative for my blood. Ugh - Bill Frist went there
Then, 2 days later:
I have decided to give Princeton the benefit of the doubt. I will be applying regular decision. If I get in (and thats a BIG if), then I will visit the school once more before deciding on my final choice.
It's true that people with graduate school degrees tend to be liberal, but the academia is so liberal that it doesn't surprise me at all.

Thank you.

Sempitern555 obviously doesnt have a clue what conservative means. He/she needs to get their head out of their ass.
Trust me, I have NO clue why anyone would be liberal.
Beechbum, that's saddening. I am a liberal and yet I can understand perfectly why people would be conservative. You need to try harder to see the logic in both positions, and then associate yourself ideologically with whichever position best fits your opinions.

As far as the link between higher education and liberalism - duh. But this shouldn't be a reason for being liberal. I live in a conservative town, but the top 10 students in my grade are liberal. Liberals tend to value education.

However, I hate when my liberal peers ostracize the conservatives simply because "the liberals are smarter." That's ridiculous. Hey, it could be true, but one's academic success does not strip him of his right to hold a political opinion.

No. Even if ALL African-Americans and Hispanics were liberal, this is only a total of 25% of the American population, whereas liberals account for approximately 50%. (Obviously this is impossible to confirm, especially considering the fact that most people have a mix of liberal and conservative positions. I am going by the fact that about 50% of voters voted Democratic.) I have heard that about 8 in ten African-Americans and 6 in ten Hispanics vote Democratic, but a quick web search provides me with a wide range of numbers. Assuming the 8/10 and 6/10 rate, about 16% of liberals are comprised of blacks and hispanics. Whites are still the majority.

However, it's ridiculous to assert statistical evidence about lib v. conservative. We can only talk about Democrat v. Republican since statistics about THAT are ubiquitous.

P.S. Outside of L.A. and Miami/Dade counties, Hispanics tend to cluster in conservative areas and vote Republican, especially in NM and Southern TX.
Both of these groups [blacks and hispanics] have a lower rate of enrollment in college. Check the stats.
And yet, despite that, colleges - especially those on the Top 50 - seem to be overwhelmingly liberal. Check the stats. (Most colleges have polled students on political and/or ideological affiliation. I don't know if Yale has, but it's generally considered to have a liberal atmosphere.)

Supposedly, there is an upward trend in Afro-American and Hispanic college enrollment, no doubt helped somewhat by affirmative action but also indicative of the fact that these two groups are becoming better educated. (And thus, probably even more liberal.)
I wouldn't.

Anyway, most sensible people don't criticize others' beliefs on the basis of intelligence. But then again, there is some truth to the notion that it takes intelligence to be able to support beliefs with logic.

Uh huh. Because we know that if someone is a bum, he must be liberal. Even if he's pro-life, superreligious and pistol-packin'.

Beechbum, I think you are severely misinformed, and for that reason maybe I can understand your inability to grasp why someone might stand left of center.

Race composition stats: http://www.census.gov/population/pop-profile/2000/chap02.pdf

Btw, census.gov has lots of other apropos info.

-Actie

p.s. Given your username, am I to assume that you're liberal?

p.p.s Let's return to the original topic. If you want to talk politics further, start a new thread!

First..."Trust me, I have NO clue why anyone would be liberal."

"Beechbum, that's saddening. I am a liberal and yet I can understand perfectly why people would be conservative."

It not that I don't understand liberals...i just dont see how you can justify some of their beliefs.

"...search provides me with a wide range of numbers. Assuming the 8/10 and 6/10 rate, about 16% of liberals are comprised of blacks and hispanics. Whites are still the majority.

Yes, but how much of the minority population is conservative?

"P.S. Outside of L.A. and Miami/Dade counties, Hispanics tend to cluster in conservative areas and vote Republican, especially in NM and Southern TX."

No, Southern Texas went to Kerry. There's a map with the county breakdown from the election.

"Uh huh. Because we know that if someone is a bum, he must be liberal. Even if he's pro-life, superreligious and pistol-packin'."

You cannot possibly tell me that the people standing on the street holding up signs saying, "Please help" wearing brand new Nikes, and taking people's money are not the LEAST bit liberal. It is a trend that conservatives believe in working hard and not taking government handouts, over begging for money. As for the pistol packin' blah blah...superreligious and pistol packin' are huge stereotypes. But until both liberals and conservatives stop the rash judgements, i cant be penalized for saying some things about liberals. That part is a lose-lose situation.

"p.p.s Given your username, am I to assume that you're liberal?"

My username might have 'bum' in it, but i dont live behind a Hess station in the woods. Sure you can't simply CALL someone a bum, but when they LIVE AND ACT like a bum, they are in fact a bum.

Tell me if I've missed anything.

I have a question about hispanics.....actually my French teacher wants to know.....

Why do hispanics consider themselves as a different race?

The French, Italians, and Spanish consider themselves white....so why are hispanics any different?

I go to a school thats 76% hispanic and no one could answer the question...i'm just wondering...

huge stereotypes?
haha

and like the whole liberals want free money conservatives work hard for their money isnt a huge frickin stereotype?
beechbum is just throwing out the idiot rallying cry of the conservatives without thinking about the issue
liberals favor assistance to the poor so that everone can begin life with an equal opportunity (not really, rich ppl will always have the advantage, but it helps)
it is not fair that ones birth should determine ones place in life, and so liberals attempt to correct this with governemnt programs aimed to ease the burden on the poor
and the whole conservative notion that ppl dont work and live off of welfare is entirely made up. it is not possible to live off of welfare money. you still need to work. the actual amount of money given out is intentionally small, so that recipients still have to work. and regardless welfare takes up a VERY small portion of government spending, so dont feel righteous in your idiot notion that you are being taxed to death to gelp the poor (the vast majority of your taxes are going to fight the frivolous wars that YOYU voted for)

just inform yourself and slough the idiot stereotypes before you come to any conclusions

hispanics are usually a mix between spaniards and the indigenous population of their respective regions
hence the different race thing

sempitern, it seems youre either speaking to an inordinately high percentage of morons, or you simply arent hearing the logic behind conservative positions. I myself am a moderate conservative, and i would be happy to defend any one of my opinions from you, and i assure you the argument (at least on my end) will be entirely coherent and logical. do your best.

and stefo, hispanics are not necessarily a mix between spaniards and the indiginous population. there are plenty of mexicans and other south americans, especially in the ruling classes, with either little or no indiginous blood, and they are still considered hispanic. further, spaniards are also considered hispanic by colleges at least. the fact is they are mostly caucasian, hence the need for many colleges to put "White, non-Hispanic" as a choice for self identification. it is the term "latino" that applies solely to those from the spanish-speaking western hemisphere countries.

"liberals favor assistance to the poor so that everone can begin life with an equal opportunity (not really, rich ppl will always have the advantage, but it helps)
it is not fair that ones birth should determine ones place in life,"

The President of the Florida Senate was born into a dirt poor family and community. Do NOT tell me that birth establishes your status because it's bull*****. If liberals feel the need to help the poor people so much, then they should be writing the donation checks. Do not tell some other Joe what to do with his money, talk about an idiot notion.

As for the "frivolous" war, I would rather be spending my tax money to solve an issue in the world that could result with my children not having to worry about some Middle Eastern group bombing them at work.

trust me i consider myself quite conservative but everybody is forgetting some major points:
1. in this country, unlike many other countries, you can think as you may.
2. freedom of thought is guaranteed in many governmental documents.

so as long as everyone is polite about their beliefs- then whatever. i have to deal with a kid who is communist everyday in school. i respect his beliefs. however, he is a pain in the ass so i hate him.

just be nice and say what you want. thats what this country is based on.

lol....ok i can agree with that mjc11387.

Stefo, I bet youre nice and all....but youre a pain in the ass. :D
