Yale is my #1 choice WHy?????

beechbum: until you live in someone else's shoes, you probably shouldn't make comments on their lives and difficulties. As to your example from of the president of the Florida Senate: yes, some people are talented and driven enough that they will succeed no matter what. Indeed, being poor is often a strong impetus to move up in life...American dream and all that. However, not everyone in the world is as motivated and gifted, including many people born poor and many people born rich. Those ppl born poor who don't have any particular talents still deserve an opportunity to lead a good life.

That's my two cents, anyways. Btw, I used to be extremely conservative, and now I'm a moderate with liberal leanings. After sitting back and really considering some of my positions, that's where I ended up. I can understand positions from both sides of the aisle, though.

ok so one example of a success story means that anyone can rise the through ranks, and that luck does not play a role at all?

and you are calling me a pain in the ass for what, that i dared to confront your opinion and expose your irrational stereotypes

and you are still missing my point beechbum, very few government dollars (percentage wise) goes to welfare

and how can you argue that being poor doesnt put you at a disadvantage. just cuz there are success stories doesnt deny the general trend (and besides, the ppl who do succeed love to brag about being a"self made man". they exaggerate how disadvantaged they actually were). going to an inner city public school versus a nice public school in the suburbs certainly puts one at a disadvantage, right? having to contend with poverty also affects ones ability to focus on the future. hence the welfare system (most of which goes to medicaid and food stamps anyways. basic necessities, not "free money to lazy ppl")

and if you conservatives didnt feel the need to throw anyone caught using drugs in jail for years, you would svae yourself much more than you would by taking away the glimmer of hope from the poor so you can buy another bmw

Ahh I don't have time to read through all four pages, but I just had my interview today and it made me love Yale even more. I'm absolutely crazy about it now!
So yea, go yale =)

Just to point something out quickly here, Beachbum.

Liberals are much less interested in introducing new taxes than in appropriating the money that the government already takes in with taxation in different ways. One of those ways is in programs that benefit poorer people, such as Medicare and Welfare, whereas conservatives are more focused on things like military spending. Bush also offers tax rebates, but at the end of the day, the benefit of a small cash rebate at the end of the year doesn't equal the economic benefit that everyone would reap if the money that's rebated were put to a more fiscally sound use (or so liberals believe, hard to know for sure).

Anyway, the point is that John & Jane Doe who make the average salary for an upper middle class family won't neccesarily be paying more in taxes, just that their tax money will be going to different causes. (It's worth noting that for people who make substantially more--in the millions--there are extra traxes that liberals tend to support and conservatives tend to dislike.)

Beachbum... did you apply EA or Regular?

Here's my take on all your debate: http://www.samayres.com

i applied regular.......that kid really drew those?

"and you are calling me a pain in the ass for what, that i dared to confront your opinion and expose your irrational stereotypes"

no....read the post above mine when i said that...i even put a little smiley face....maybe its time for your nap....

I'm not gonna bother to argue anymore about this becuz you nor I can change anyone's mind.

"ok so one example of a success story means that anyone can rise the through ranks, and that luck does not play a role at all?"

no, it means that rising through the ranks isnt impossible.

"Those ppl born poor who don't have any particular talents still deserve an opportunity to lead a good life. "
"you would svae yourself much more than you would by taking away the glimmer of hope from the poor so you can buy another bmw"

Yeah it's sad, but it's really not my responsibility to worry about all the other people. If I worried about every Tom, Dick and Harry who is poor, then I would go nuts.

"and you are still missing my point beechbum, very few government dollars (percentage wise) goes to welfare"

No, I'm not. I was actually gonna use that in one of my responses, but I hit the back button by accident and forgot to add it when I was redoing the reply...hehe...oops.

I don't want anyone to get a bad image of me. I'm really not like Byerly :). I'm a pretty cool person on other issues, but there is no point in pursuing this one. We'll have to "agree to disagree." This gets me all worked up and I have a calculus final tomorrow.

That kid, me, did draw those.

I hope you get in, you and I could do the YPU and we could do some debates. That would be fun!

Yale's campus was probably the most gorgeous of any other that I've visited, and from what I gathered, they realy want to make sure that undergrads are getting a great education, unlike a certain school starting with H to the northeast. And the people who I know or met who have gone to Yale seem really awesome. And their Classics program is phenomenal. Plus, New Haven gets a bad rap, I think it's a nice small city personally.

Zante- when did you send in your application? Or did you interview on campus?

I sent in my app like two-three weeks ago. I had an alum interview. I think it was just that my interviewer was really efficient (she even said that she's on top of things). Yale of course is pretty efficient because they gave my name to her pretty quickly. I got contacted a week after sending in my app!

For those in New York, I hope you're lucky enough to interview at the Yale Club like I did. It's gorgeous and fancy but totally friendly.

I'd like to go to Darmouth because the share the Yale Club, too (they don't have their own). That would be cool. :)

Colorado365...omg...those were excellent! I definitely hope we get the chance to debate. It's hard to do it over the internet. You are very talented though!

I thought that yale shared the club with dartmouth and UVa but perhaps it's more like, they lend/rent it out to Dart and UVa for their functions because my interviewer definitely told me that Yale owned the whole building (the only school that does, supposedly)

Wow, this post has severly devolved.

Politically speaking Yale is my kind of place.

oh btw, being the diehard hardcore liberal that I am, I have to just put in a little politics into the post.

Conservatives are stingy people who take advantage of others. Liberals are fair people.

PS. OSAMA does NOT = Saddam, how the h___ did the Bush administration convince the American public that it was so? Well maybe the fact that 84% of 18-24 year olds not being able to locate Iraq on a map illustrates the ignorance of the American public. Conservatives cut education dollars, people end up stupider and voting conservative. btw- republicans can't claim fiscal responsibility because dubya's deficit is more than the New Deal and WWII combined. Dems know how to run the show. Reps know how to hand out pork barrel spending to their corporate campaign donors.

I think ... therefore I am a democrat

Colorado 365, those are some awesome cartoons. Congratulations on your awards and decorations, and I really enjoy the "Bush's Values" panel.

well.....sempitern555.....looks like youre out-numbered...:p

Multiple personalities, sempitern?

"Wow, this post has severly devolved."

immediately followed with the completely tame, logical, and reasonable point:

"Conservatives are stingy people who take advantage of others. Liberals are fair people."

which leads into a rant on saddam vs. osama. if youre wondering why the post has "devolved," you might want to glance in the mirror. but then again, you clearly would rather throw out incoherent insults than engage in meaningful debate. im willing to guess that all those conservatives who have "never had a logical argument" were trying to do the latter while you were concentrating on your next rant or insult. oh well.

lol......i'm just gonna stay quiet.

that's right beechbum, you do that, what liberals need is more outspoken activists so that we dont get shouted down by the far right, which I must admit is very successful in a united approach to news.
