Yale University will change the name of Calhoun College, a residential college named for an ardent supporter of slavery, and replace that moniker with one honoring computer scientist Grace Murray Hopper.

Ms. Hopper worked on early computer software and helped develop COBOL, a computer language that became ubiquitous by the 1970s. Ms. Hopper retired as a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy at age 79 and was awarded a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Barack Obama.

This is a timely quote of hers:

Might want to merge?

I just got the email too. Yipee! I hope Tobias and his fellow students are pleased. I thought his op-ed in The NY Times was very compelling.

If you are privy to the email sent to students please read it. You will then see how much thought, time and attention was paid to every aspect of this decision. Hopper is a fitting replacement.

Out of curiosity, was there some outcry from older Yale alums…especially those from the south and/or who exhibit pro-Confederate sympathies?

Grace Hopper was a badass. I’m not qualified to debate the issues of rewriting history, applying current standards to historical figures, and so forth, but Grace Hopper is well worthy of the honor bestowed on her.

Now we are awaiting the renaming of Lake Calhoun here in Minneapolis.

Naming Hopper is great: the woman who coded.

Vassar grad- class of '28!!

She is an alum of their grad school. Undergrad was Vassar- class of '28.

Grace Hopper was amazing. Glad to hear of the renaming!

If you haven’t seen her speak, this appearance on David Letterman is fun to watch:

Wonderful to hear it. I’ve had a small article about her floating around my house for my kids to happen upon for about two years now. One of my girls let Hopper’s name pop out during an in-class Jeopardy game, winning that round for her team. She came home ecstatic that she’d remembered Hopper’s name.

Perhaps they will rename Yale itself since its founders discriminated against women.

“Perhaps they will rename Yale itself since its founders discriminated against women.”

Let’s get that started.

This was an interest reed. The intersection of history and the personal.

Well chosen indeed!

This will go nowhere due to carefully crafted “principles of renaming”

As an old COBOL programmer I couldn’t be more delighted to hear this about Grace Hopper, the Mother of COBOL!

^ not only COBOL, she also popularized the term “bug.”
