Yale SCEA Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

I haven’t received my portal access either. I submitted my application on Oct 31 and am an international student

Interview reports are due December 1 so if you are not contacted by the end of November you will likely not get interviewed for the SCEA round. This is way, way too early to worry about not being contacted yet.

Does anyone else think admission rates could be higher ( not just at Yale but most of the selective colleges) with Trump’s presidency, with it acting as a deterrent for international admissions? Thoughts?

Any idea how many SCEA applications there are this year?

@saadthekhan I think that’s wishful thinking. Imagine you really want to go to a school in Britain. Would brexit have changed that?

It’s not exactly the same but if an international applicant’s dream school is Yale, I think they’re going to apply regardless of Trump.

Do applicants that have had an on campus interview also have a chance to do an alumni interview?

@auntyji No. On campus interviewees’ contact info is not passed to local alumni interview committees.

@saadthekhan Eliminating OPT program was one of Trump’s promises. I think that’s what’s gonna screw us bad in terms of getting jobs. Oh, and the hating atmosphere towards foreign individuals will be more visible, I think. Not so sure about this cuz I’m not in the States right now, but I think Trump becoming president has more of a symbolic meaning. Sort of like: “Hey, our president approves hate towards aliens… Why shouldn’t we?” Kinda freaks me out when I think about actually ‘experiencing’ underlying discriminations.

What if my interviewer is the reason I don’t get an interview? I was contacted on the 25th or so, responded within a few hours, didn’t hear back for six days. Finally set an time (it’s an online interview) for last Sunday at 12. 12:15 on Sunday I still have had no contact (he had my Skype address), I email to double check with the time change, he says he got pulled into a meeting at the last minute and needs to cancel and asks what times work for me next weekend. Once again, I responded within an hour and still have not heard back. I feel like this shouldn’t reflect badly on me, but I think everyone here is in the same anxious boat and I just wanted to get a second opinion.

@ThomasKMJ , I can’t speak to OPT or F-1 visas, but I’d be shocked if anyone at Yale takes Trump’s election as license to act towards non-citizens with hate. Yale has a number of foreign students, and many students have traveled extensively (a well-known antidote to xenophobia).

The number of international applications might go down, but I don’t think that expecting unfriendly reactions should be the cause.

OK, that explains it.

Any idea if it’s a relative disadvantage to have only had an on campus interview rather than an alumni interview, or are they comparable?

Thanks for any insight into this @T26E4 !

@auntyji This is just my experience, but sometimes the seniors are less prepared for an interview than an alumnus who has had practice over years. I had an on campus interview with a senior and it was rather awkward. (I’ll admit, it wasn’t just her–I was nervous). During the interview she didn’t really “lead” the conversation and when I tried to ask her a question (branching off an extracurricular of mine) she told me she’d prefer if I save any questions for the end (kind of anti-conversation). (This is the opposite of the other interviews I’ve had where there was much more of a give and take aspect.)
My assumption is that an alumni interview either weighs more (more experience) or equal to an on campus interview.

Don’t assume that. The alumni volunteers have many newly graduated students in their ranks too. Yes there are some of us who are veterans (in the write up portal, it specifically asks us the number of years we’ve been interviewing for Yale and the # we personally conduct/year) – but what’s of value are clearly written supporting information for any conclusions drawn, if at all possible.

My D received an email about an interview today. She applied on 10/23.

Thanks for your input @T26E4 and @Seniors.yikes.us S thought the two seniors he talked with were very nice so we will hope for the best.

Today, my friend had an interview with Penn, and his interviewer told him that if you get an interview, you are in the gray zone between acceptance or rejection. I didn’t believe him at first, because why would the interviewer say that? And he was contacted for an interview ONLY 2 days after submitting his app. Is this true for Penn and more importantly, Yale?!

@DreamforIvy: either the interviewer misspoke, your friend misheard him or misunderstood him or your friend is misrepresenting the conversation.

Penn and Yale interviewing is exactly the same. Like you discerned, no one looked at the contents of your file before your name was sent out to be contacted for an interview. In my area, every single person who applied has been assigned to an interview. I can guarantee you among them are people who have ZERO chance of being admitted. Indeed, I would say that describes three of the four students I’ve interviewed this last week alone.

Switched to Yale EA from Harvard EA on October 31…I’m sure you can all imagine how fun my Halloween was as I cranked out those essays…but at least I get to use my legacy now haha (both parents went to Yale for undergrad and law school)

What’s the deal with midyear reports for SCEA?

@T26E4 You could tell just from the interview that they had zero chance? What do you look for to determine this?
