Hey guys. I am from Myanmar and I am currently attending a Pre-Collegiate Program. I was wondering if you guys can tell me if I am a good candidate or not. I never planned to apply to Yale since my SAT scores were too low. I didn’t even look at Yale website till my November SAT scores came out. It was 4 days before EA date and my scores jumped up 150 points for the evidence based reading and writing section and 60 for Maths. I never expected that considering I was busy with my school work and never had time to practice SAT. Now my SAT scores are 730 (EBR&W) and 760 (Maths). My counselor told me to apply two ivy leagues (our school has always been hesitant when students apply to ivy leagues, they only allow those they think have a chance). I was in panic but I chose to apply to Yale (My first early decision school was Swarthmore). My supplements are not the very best like other students who have been preparing for Yale weeks/months ahead. I only had 4 days and for the first day I had to research other ivy leagues because I was not sure which one suits me the best. I never looked at top schools before.
My GPA is 3.91 unweighted and I am pretty confident about my recommendations. I did a lot of extracurricular activities. I am not that financially well off. My school is very selective (only 15 students were chosen from a pool of 100 students) and founded by two Yale Professors. They retired last year and I am not hoping for any connection advantage. I am afraid about the results now. I really like Yale but I don’t want to put my hopes up because almost other candidates have higher SAT scores than me. Our country has very limited resources and even finding SAT subject test teachers is very hard. I don’t have very huge accomplishments. I dropped out of medical school at my country because the education system is terrible.
Please criticize and tell me frankly if I should have hope or just completely lose hope? This is hard :(. I am more worried about the “what ifs.” What if I get deferred but I know that my condition is inclining towards rejected. Thanks a lot guys.
If you get in, it won’t be because of that SAT score.
If you get rejected, it won’t be because of that SAT score.
Everything adds up. You’ll certainly get a YES to the “can this student do the work?” question. But unless you list your extra curriculars, we cannot probably tell you if you have a reasonable shot at YALE. Needless to say, work on the applications for other schools for the regular round. Yale is a school with 6% acceptance rate.
18 days till decisions!
Thanks @nyawaj My extra curriculars are mostly volunteer works and community service. I worked as a caretaker/nursing assistant at an elderly hospital for 8 months. An assistant teacher at a deaf school for 9 months. I coordinated a tour in Myanmar for alumni of Volunteers in Asia and an exchange program for 20 students from Thailand, Japan and Taiwan I founded a small free library in my community. I organized a scavenger hunt that gives awareness to the preservation of colonial buildings of our country. I am currently interning at a Norwegian organization called Partnership for Change (on my 7th month). I help organize workshops that are emphasized on women empowerment. I got 2nd prize at a National Achievement Examination. I have always been in the top 1% at school. I hope you can evaluate me
@minyoongi - International admissions to any of the Ivies is VERY tough. All you can do is apply and wait. Btw - did you do ED to Swarthmore and EA to Yale?
Ahhhh I’m so nervous for the 15th
@MedSciBud Yale’s EA is restrictive so I can’t apply any other early decision. Any suggestions for ED II? I am looking into John Hopkins, Carleton, Amherst, and NYU.
I went to a fly in program at carleton and if was awesome! It’s small but the student body is really close and the students are super nice. They also have tons of cool and quirky traditions and northfield is a great little town. My sister goes to college in the same town (at st. Olaf)
I dont think johns Hopkins has ED II
Hey guys,
I’ve applied for Yale EA as an international student. What do you think of the chances of someone with a 1400 SAT score and 740’s in both the Physics and Maths Level 2 SAT Subject Tests? My SAT scores may look somewhat low but I have an unweighed GPA of 4/4. I’m incredibly scared about the decision but at the same time, hopeful!
@CSGuy123 Your test scores are pretty good, but it all depends on your essays and extracurriculars! So many people have similar test scores, so the EC’s and Essays are what distinguishes you from the applicant pool:)
@CSGuy123 trust me those SAT scores are fine. If you don’t get in, they definitely won’t be the cause. I am also an international and my school sends kids to Yale with much lower SAT scores so you are fine. Where are you from btw?
Does it mean anything if Yale is requesting my tax documents through the CSS? I sent them the FAFSA but we just got a request for the tax documents
@technogirl21 Did you get an email? Or was it on the profile.
i dont know my mom told me hahaha

@technogirl21 - CSS profile is required for all fin aid applicants. Looks like you may have missed the deadline and Yale reminded you. Unfortunately, does not look as any other sign. Good luck though.
@yalemasala. You will get in.
Okay, Yale is never a guarantee for anyone…except like Malia Obama, etc. ^
@chichewaboy I’m from Pakistan! How about you?
