Yale SCEA Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

What time on the 15th will decisions be released?

@swim1128 It depends… What state do you live in?

@DreamforIvy thanks!

I go to a tiny public school (74 in my grade) and as far as I know I’m the only one applying to Yale (a couple other kids might be applying to ivies, but I doubt a large number). On the other hand, as far as I know in recent history no one has every been accepted anywhere but cornell (3 year streak) and I think one upenn a few years ago. On the other side we’re about 5 minutes (or less) form one of the top public schools so if they read by local area (which they do I think) I’m probably wayyyyy less impressive

@colleges321 - sorry, I don’t really have that kind of insight. I have been on the applicant side twice - once for myself and most recently for my D who is a junior. As an interviewer, I interview those applicants assigned to me and try to do my very best to give Yale a sense of the “real” you, not just stats on the paper. Of course, what your teachers and Counselors say is also extremely pertinent because they see you more in your natural state. Some people just don’t interview well and it comes across. I don’t know how many rounds each app goes through, you can get some info from the website and articles about how top tier schools cull through the many applications they receive. Alas, there is no magic bullet. All I can say is that I feel your angst. Good luck.

My advise to those who will be checking decisions on December 15 - do not check at school! I can remember fall of 2013 when Ivy decisions started coming out. There were many meltdowns at school and it can be scary for the student and their friends. My D had volleyball practice, waited for me to pick her up, then we drove away from the school, fired up the hotspot and she checked. Good news or bad, I was there for her. I know other kids who did it with parents or family around, or even close friends. However, you may want to think about doing it without someone standing by for moral support - and to celebrate when you get in!!

Hello to fellow SCEA applicants!
My twin and I both fell in love with Yale when we visited so we both applied SCEA and we are anxiously waiting for the 15th… still unsure if us both applying would help/hurt us or neither, but I guess that time will tell!

I can’t speak for Yale but I know someone who’s twin applied to Columbia and her sister also applied and both got in (though I think one went to the engineering school)

@andie2017 I’m a twin also! I was worried it would hurt but a lot of twins attend similar schools, twins are def different individuals!

Two identical twins from my daughter’s school both enrolled in Cornell.

We know 2 identical twin girls who both attended Yale, roughly a decade ago. IMO, your odds don’t change as a result.

There were quadruplets also a few years back.

No one from my school has gone to an Ivy League school (or other top schools, stanford, etc.) in at least ten years, maybe more. Do you think it will hurt me that my school (public, rural, 1200 students) is not particularly well reputed?

I’ve also been struggling with the general ignorance about Yale admissions around me. All my teachers and counselors and family and friends just think, “oh, you’ll get in.” I understand how competitive admissions are to elite schools and I am expecting to be deferred, but I am surrounded by people are are meaning well but don’t understand the reality of the situation. I feel like I will disappoint everyone

@elijaheliot I know how you feel, I’m in the same boat.

@elijaheliot and @RoundGenius , as a general principal, Yale (and other holistic admissions schools, I’m sure) try not to penalize kids for things that out of their control. For example, if their HS offered no AP courses, or if their family’s finances required the student to help out financially.

It’s about what you made of your circumstances.

I think the schools, and especially Yale, want to “open up” to all kinds of applicants not previously on their radar. I wouldn’t worry about the track record or the resources your school has, though I can see it being annoying to hear “you will get in” when the speaker doesn’t understand how competitive it is. I think Yale is looking to go beyond feeder schools, legacies, privileged applicants, etc etc

Do you guys think it will hurt my chances that I didn’t submit SAT II scores to Yale despite having a good transcript? And have you heard of anyone being admitted without sending SAT II scores? The website says not sending SAT II scores will not disadvantage you but I just want to be sure. Thanks.
