Yale SCEA Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

@yrose17 How do you know they called hundreds of applicants?

I know they called 5 from my school, and I’ve been talking to friends/seniors across the country and people got called at their schools… I’m largely estimating, but I doubt I’m far off

@yrose17 Have all of the calls been positive? Did anyone get rejected over the phone?

All of the Brown calls were positive. No rejections over the phone, but some applicants just weren’t contacted.

@yrose17 Wow, I think what they are doing is quite disrespectful to the entire applicant pool. If you are going to have a pseudo-rolling admission/early-early release, then let your applicants know. The fact that they randomly decided to personally call a few applicants, yet leave the rest wondering what all it means, makes me lose some respect for them. If I was someone who didn’t receive a call, I would definitely be a bit shaken up and would lose some hope, for it really is unclear what these phone call’s purpose is and who they are aimed towards. I have nothing against rolling admissions and actually really like the idea of “Likely Rejection Letters” (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19931572 ), but I believe that colleges should be upfront and clear with their applicants

All of that being said, if they were calling in response to some sort of glitch, then it is understandable.

I’ve been checking the Brown thread, and it looks like it was in response to a glitch. That being said, the Brown rep who called my classmates didn’t say that was the reason, leading them to believe that either they were one of a select few to be randomly notified early, or that Brown was calling everyone who had been accepted. Out of 7 kids who applied ED from my school, 5 got the call. The 2 that didn’t felt pretty awful, though now that we know it was a glitch, they might still get in. Just very poorly handled by Brown overall.

Cornell and Upenn ED threads are so nerve wrecking…fellow Yale ea’ers I suggest a visit to those pages for an emotional rollercoaster to get your mind off of Yale(…or more into it?!)

@yrose17 Why would Yale adopt an emergency ad-hoc procedure that Brown instituted in response to a glitch? And DON’T go that crazy Penn ED thread – I was following it to offer advice here and there. Over the last few days, people have done gon’ crazy

Somewhere between slim and none. Nothing to do but take a deep breath and wait another week.

Hi! I know I’m pretty late to this thread, but oh well lol. Did everyone who applied SCEA get an interview? I did, and I think it went really well! Any idea how much it affects the admission process? I’m crazy excited for the 15th, and I know I’ll be refreshing my phone constantly all day long. Good luck everyone!

What are the chances they release decisions earlier than the 15th? The wait sucks! One of my friends got into Stanford yesterday and another two find out about Harvard on Tuesday! Why does Yale have to be last?!

@TripleThreat99 Not everyone had an interview. Mine was on-campus in September but I had everything submitted in September. Also, don’t refresh your phone all day, decisions are released 5PM EST.

@jhosk10 The colleges choose their announcement days independent of one another in the EA/ED round. Harvard is quibbling with Tuesday – it might be later. Just b/c of exigencies within their office.

Yale picked a deadline and expect to meet it - in order to thoroughly complete their work – not to prioritize anxious applicants over their comprehensive work. That’s just bureaucracy.

@T26E4 I asked that question before I knew that it was a glitch. Now it’s just a question of whether Yale will release all results before the given date (I know that WashU did)

that makes sense. I think speculating whether or not Yale will advance its announcement is nerves speaking.

I sympathize with each of you. I applied RD many years ago and simply knew to be on the lookout for either 1) a fat package (yay!) or 2) a single letter (boo!). And the expected date was vague too so I had no build up other than to know that it was likely going to arrive between X and Y.

Indeed, I rec’d word from another Ivy on a Thursday and Yale’s package arrived that Friday.

Could somebody link the SCEA 2020 thread? Can’t find it.
Thanks!
Good luck to all!

Princeton announced they’re releasing on Thursday too, but 2 hours before Yale releases decisions.

@jhosk10 they save the best for last I suppose

(On a personal note due to a sudden death Thursday went from “I’ll look at it with my family at 5!” to “I’m going to be home alone”)

Well we’re not the very last; MIT’s EA results will be coming out after Yale’s (even though it isn’t an Ivy) on December 15th at 6:28 pm (Tau time…nerds).

The stress of decisions has made me so much more comfortable with going to my safety school.
