I was accepted but get the feeling that it's not particularly selective nor will it help much on college applications. I know attending would let me experience life there but I'm not remotely interested in attending Yale after high school. Is this a major waste of money for me?

(fyi: what I would be doing with my time if I didn't go would be volunteering a lot, taking classes (for credit) at an art college, and maybe attending something like the NSLC with a friend, so it's not like I would be wasting my time).

I can't help but feel that they'll accept almost anyone to pay to keep their buildings air-conditioned for the summer.

Believe it or not but they feel that offering the facilities and faculty and courses actually is rewarding for the students regardless of selectivity. They probably want kids who will be serious and take advantage of the curriculum.

Unlike some schools where Summer Sessions are extended marketing plans to sell the school to participants, Y doesn't have that much as their motivation w/their summer sessions. They actually LIKE educating others...

Selective or not, it's a lot of fun and might very well change your mind on attending for college. Does it have to be exclusive to be rewarding?

I work for YSS and I can tell you first hand that a lot, lot of resources - financial, manpower, time - are pummeled into making the session as constructive and above all fun as possible for the students. It's definitely not about money from Yale's side. To be cynical about it I suppose they want to let non-Yalies experience some of Yale firsthand so as to really showcase all of our strengths. On your end of the bargain, this still amounts to a great experience.

I know what you mean, I am in the same situation as you. I have applied stanford but can’t help and feel the same as you. Does any1 has any ideas about a selective summer program? Or not selective but I can actually gain something out of it?
o…yea also, do you think it matters that the teachers from summer session are NOT the same people in the department? They are either TAs/ lecturers from other universities.

I have heard that there is very little in terms of events designed to get high schoolers attending the Pre College program to know each other. Is this true? How hard is it for high schoolers attending the program to make friends?
