Just as the title said. I really have NO idea even though they have really different cultures. I like MIT because it's science oriented and it has great research opportunities. But Yale, I feel, is more liberal arts inclined which I like. But I do have a couple of qualms...

My main concern about Yale is the safety of the campus. How safe is it, really?

How is the social life at Yale? I've heard that Yale tends to be preppy...

In your other post you said the same thing about Columbia and MIT… ??? Now you got into Yale as well? What happened to Columbia… You didn’t say anywhere else you got into yale… and its passed the deadline to commit to a college so just stop.

I guess I forgot to mention that I got off the waitlist…

And just a note in case it wasn’t really clear in my post. I really LOVE Yale. It’s just that I want to get a clearer sense of the school. So I guess “choose” wasn’t really the right word to use.

Yale is in an urban setting, and you’ll need to lock your bike and use common sense, but I don’t think campus safety should be a reason to pick MIT over Yale. I also don’t think the social life at Yale is particularly preppy–the residential colleges mix everybody up, and preppy kids certainly don’t predominate in any way. Anyway, these are not the differences between Yale and MIT that should matter–they are such different schools that what matters is whether you want a science/tech-oriented school or one that has a broader liberal arts focus.

We probably rate among the most safety conscious, and so the question of safety was central in our minds as our son was making his college decision. We attended the bulldog days, paying special attention to campus safety. Our son had a range of excellent choices, including on the campus safety spectrum, and we are comfortable that he has chosen Yale.

We have spent our lives in small college towns and studied in big city campuses. We know and we stress to anyone that you have to be careful on all college campuses (big or small, urban or rural), and it is just not smart to be walking alone anywhere in the dark. Yale campus that blends in with the city is no different. Inside the residences and the old campus, it seems totally safe to go anywhere at most times. You also feel safe, for example, walking from the old campus to the science campus during normal hours, and it seems like you’d be fine in later hours if you’re in a group. (Like many campuses, Yale has its own police department and escort services when needed.)

If you like to hit the streets after midnight, then that’s a cause for safety concern; at Yale campus and everywhere else.

I’m a 2012 applicant and deciding between whether to apply to MIT or Yale early. What I’m concerned with is the science curriculum at Yale. Are there funding for research for all undergraduates and how easy is it to get the funding?
