Yale's academic strengths

I've been wondering, what are the subjects that Yale are great in? I think it's obvious that it's known for law, but what else is it strong in? They've gotta earn their great reputation of theirs through some other academic areas right?

oh and one more question, are we gettin shirts with our acceptances? WOOO!

Hello,

the short answer to your question is that all of Yale College's departments are absolutely world-class, and in keeping with all of the best academic institutions in the country.

to be more specific, though, it is true that there are certain departments which are regarded as unquestionably the strongest at Yale, and the strongest in the world in their field. some examples of these, though not all of them, are History, Art History, Ethics Politics&Economics, Theater arts, Music, classics, Philosophy. The list goes on. Generally, the social sciences are incredible. As are languages: Yale will teach you Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, etc. etc. etc. really well and really fast. The language departments are highly regarded, and there are lots and lots of available languages.

but don't disregard other areas. My suitemate is one of the omst incredible chemists I know and is likely to be destined for a Nobel Prize.

go figure.

is their gov't/political science program strong? as strong as harvards?

Well, to put it this way, the Yale Law School is consistently ranked #1 in the country - over Harvard's. Yes, government/political science is very strong at Yale. There are a number of directions by which you can approach the subject area - Ethics, Politics, & Economics, for example, is a unique major that, according to my tour guide over the summer, "asks the 'why?' rather than the 'how?'" with regards to politics.

Oh, and another of Yale's many strengths: ARCHITECTURE. :D

Yes, its very strong. Yes, its as strong if not stronger than Harvard's. But remember, they both have world class faculty, so its hard to define strong. What should matter to you is how Yale's faculty relates to its students, how the department operates, and how the major is set up. Remember, Harvard's strength and resources and time in these things is focused on the Kennedy School of Government... not Harvard College.

You're better off at Yale.

Exactly right PK'Wink. Yale College is really the jewel in the crown.

It doesn't matter which one is higher ranked, both are probably more or less equally ranked anyways. What will matter in practice is the focus you get at Yale -- something you will NOT find elsewhere.

good luck, great choices!

Film at Yale sucks. All the film majors I know, switched into theater studies because of the red-tape of the program.

How about the Sciences?
