Yay Applications!

@rareparadox,

I don’t know which questions you will get at Andover as my son didn’t apply there but I guess there will be general questions as well as applicant-specific ones.

As for the general questions, they are general, I mean they are the ones that almost every BS asks. Why are you interested in Andover, what is your favorite subject, EC, etc?

An interview is a tool with which you can tell the school who you are. You help them understand you better. So, give them a genuine answer. For better or worse, you need to let them know yourself better.

An interview is also a way of getting to know about the school better. So there is nothing wrong saying you don’t know the school inside out yet. You can also take some time before you answer their questions.

Take some time and look up its school brochure. Try to think about why you are interested in Andover. Is it because you like the school so much? What made you like it? How much do you know about the school? Do you like it because of its reputation or because it’s your parents’ favorite? Think about the reasons of your own. Try to match some good things about the school with yourself. Try to see if there is a strong fit. It is not only for the application, but for your entire decision-making process when you are accepted and decide which school to go. Many students still choose the school that they didn’t like, because of its reputation. They might lead an unhappy high school life.

When the AO asks you what brings you to an Andover interview, you don’t need to try to give them the best answer. But show them at least you have your own reasons why you are interested. The answer should be yours, not parents’.

After all, it is you vs you, not you vs. admission officer or your parents. I know how stressed you have been. Try to relax and get to know the school better. I wish you all the best!

patronyork,

Thank you so much for your support, and everyone else also!
I will take your advice and definitely follow through with it!
During the tour I will see and look for reasons why I would like to go!

synchro: only for personal rec. The form they give you, though, is what you should use. If, though, somebody says “let me write a letter of recommendation”, and he’s an alumni/someone important/someone known, then having a letter is great.

My vice principal actually used to teach at Lawrenceville,
I’m applying there also and he actually really quite liked me.
Sadly, he has left this year.

If you have his contact info and he could really advocate for you, then you should ask him for a letter of recommendation.

Hello everyone! I am finally back!

The interview went well, my interviewer was so extremely kind and very easy to talk to! I felt like I was talking to a friend and she was so peppy!
I did stumble on one question though, she asked how I liked my current school and honestly I hate my current school, I have no real friends that really care about me and there is no proper challenge for me. The kids at my school are very cliquey and it’s a nightmare. And can I be honest? I like NOTHING about my current school.
But I didn’t want to whine and complain so I made up a lie about how my school is really “mind opening” and “great”. I’m pretty sure she saw through that because I was quite nervous when I said it.

Also, when I asked questions I only asked about 2-3 questions because I forgot to ask about the schedule.

I hope that does not make a huge impact.

But other than that I think that I did quite well! It was a very genuine conversation and I made sure to point out and talk about my biggest interests! I can only pray that being casual is not a negative either.

Oh and I asked my interviewer about the teacher recommendations and she said that they DO have to register on gateway.

It’s a big advantage to your teachers to do the recommendations on Gateway, which you might explain to them if they balk. If they do them on Gateway, then they just answer the questions once, and they get disseminated automatically to all the schools that you’re applying to. If they do them in paper, then they’d have to do each one separately and send them by mail.

My teachers will either love me to death, or not really like me.
I must be extra careful with my relationships this school year!

I am VERY VERY worried with my applications. I do not have many awards/achievements!
I have received the Gold Honor Award every semester since 5th grade and something else from John Hopkin’s CTY program but other than that I have nothing!

I feel that because of this I will get rejected and the time slot for the activities worries me very much.

I have many activities but because I have so much I am unable to dedicate a lot of hours per week. My Girl Scout troop only meets once a month, I do not have time to practice my instruments that much, my clubs meet once a week, and I am only provided 2 hours a week of fencing classes! It’s not like I can practice that at home either since there is no one to fence with and no room.

I guess it’s safe to say I am panicking very much. My strong interests and Poetry and Photography but it’s really hard to measure that in hours per week. It’s not like I time myself every time I write a poem or take a picture!
