Year Book.

My school is making a year book (for the first time since it was built) and I'm the "editor"...besically I have to come up with almost everything,
I just wanted to get some ideas because...well, my mind is totally blank.

I was looking at my old year books and got a few ideas from it but found that it was all too idk, old or bland. I want fresh ideas.

This is what I have so far:

-the usual poems or "artistic" stuff by the students. (only the girls want to participate, I don't know why).

-teacher interviews. basically a series of non-pesonal questions. But I still don't have a single question lol.

-I was also thinking of making something like a few pages of jokes or whatever.

-I also want to put some of the students' favourite quotes or proverbs.

-a book review (I skeptical about that one because no one would have read the book and no noe will read the review. Maybe it should be a review of the one and only school play this year.

the school is going to make a few trips so I thought we could put some pictures and stuff about them.

that's basically it (including of course the senior picture). I was also thinking of putting individual photosor headshots of the students (but it's not practical because there are like 600 kids in the school.

Is ot okay, or too boring? Be honest. Plus if you have any ideas you're most welcome to post them.

sorry this is so long... :)

At all the schools I've been to they've stuck tiny individual photos of every student in the yearbook, and my school has 1300 people in it. And there's blurbs on every club in the school, which takes up lots and lots of space.

At our school we usually devote quite a bit to sports and to quotes on subjects ranging from how overwhelmed we are with schoolwork to the several hurricanes that have passed us by. You may want to ask friends from other schools for their yearbooks to get more ideas.

My yearbook includes:

Junior prom pictures for graduating seniors
Clubs/sports pictures/theater productions
Senior pictures (that can be taken outside of school, as opposed to the bad ones taken at school)
Senior wills & favorite memories
Statistics page (favorite show, movie, etc)
Senior superlatives (Best Smile, Most Likely to Succeed, etc)
message from the principal
message from class president & StuCo leaders
teacher pictures
autograph pages

At my school, a yearbook costs around $60. Since this is the first time your school's doing yearbooks, and you only have 600 kids in your school, you probably don't want to include all that much because most people aren't going to be used to paying so much for a yearbook.

Okay, I've worked on the yearbook for a year (v. close friends with main editor-in-chief though)

Our Book has: Homerooms (of all classes)
Senior Pics (+ 1 quote)
Clubs/Sports
Events (anything that happens at school...assemblies, etc

I have to say, DO NOT use POETRY! My school's book may or may not have poetry next year, and everyone is basically against the poetry. It'll look sloppy, take a lot of work, and be overall annoying on a page layout.

Why don't you just take a poll of the senior class of what they want? That way, you're not forced to rely on random strangers' advice :0

hmmm... I'm not on yearbook but heres what ours have:
- each senior gets half a page with their picture, quotes, etc. . .
- other classes... many pictures on one page... ummm w/e
- superlatives... (said above)
- in the past we have had people bring in pictures from when they were in lower elementary school (ie. 1st, 2nd grade) and put them next to their picture now... sooo coool.... we've made a slideshow like that for graduation before... has the young pic and on the next slide their pic now... ppl have fun guessing...

Our yearbook asks students the same type of question to gain different perspectives and takes quotes from students too. They also interview teachers (mainly new teachers) and have games of matching student/teachers with their car they drive.

And then of course the usual clubs/sports/activities sections.

yearbook is one word. and umm...first you should figure out a budget to determine how many pages you can have. all the above ideas are good. congrats on being editor :D

Last year our entire yearbook was just the headshots of individual students. I thought that was the norm? We had 1300 people last year, plus some extra stuff.

do a section that says "you know when you are a junior when .... "and ask for random funny quotes from juniors....you can do the same thing with seniors...but do one or the other too make things different

My school's yearbook is typically awful if they try to write too much. (Our newspaper is typically awful, too. Kids don't know how to write... :() Unless there are good, careful writers involved in the yearbook, don't be too ambitious with articles and such. And always be careful to spell names correctly!!!

My school's yearbook often has a section where kids can submit photos and brief descriptions of what they did the previous summer. Also, there are profiles of kids' jobs, if they have them, and features on the foreign exchange students.

Seniors have "baby ads" that sell for $20 apiece. Families usually purchase the ads; they consist of a baby/toddler photo and a short message from the student's parents/family. It's always a fun section to read through, since babies are so darned cute--especially when they're your friends, 16 or 17 years ago! :D

Oh, and another word of warning: Don't let all your special features and quotes and stuff be about/come from your friends. Yeah, it's easier to get your friends to submit stuff than it is to get people you don't know to do so, but everybody can tell when the yearbook staff and editors are totally self-centered, and nobody likes it.

Good luck! :)

Thanks for all the great ideas guys.
The teacher supervising the whole thing said that a senior photo wasn't a good idea. So individual photos it is!
Since very few people want to participate in the yearbook, it won't be that big.
There will have to be a sport section -since the only EC in school was sports until just one week ago. (There are only 2 clubs in the school at school; the debate club and the yearbook).
what do you guys think of a Joke section? I happen to know this kid who could supply us with a bunch of really funny jokes.

Joke section sounds great. You can also get plenty from www.netfunny.com

jokes seem kind of random. what's in the yearbook should mostly relate to the school. maybe funny moments/anecdotes.

also try VIP's (very important persons). We have these at our school and people vote for things like most popular, best dressed, cutest couple, etc. Our school yearbook is HUGE. We have 5,000 kids pictures plus lots of other stuff. We won the national yearbook competition last year and the year prior (I'm not sure exactly what it's called because I'm not on the yearbook staff).

look at Josten's yearbook company for the future.

^where?

evrytime-wetouch;
I think the "VIP" thing and the competitions are a great idea. but I'll have to come up with stuff other than :most popular, most likely to succeed...they seem like stuff every school might do.

keep the ideas coming :)

I thought they were called Senior Superlatives, not VIPs? I guess it's different at different schools.

But at our school, we have stuff like best hair, next Donald Trump and stuff.

They're called "senior polls" at my school. And YES, make sure the categories are interesting and original! "Most Popular"? Pffffft thumbs down :p (No offense, anyone. :))

"best hair" would never work in my school; everyone wears his/her hair exactly like everyone else. They're identical!

About the teacher interviews, I need stuff that would combine humour and would also be informative.
I don't want to ask them stuff like: "what's your favourite colour?" that's boring!
I'm in the process of making them; I have 13 questions so far.
