Year end (final) grades vs. semester grades

On its official transcripts, my school provides each of my semester grades, as well as the year end (final) grades for each class that are typically weighted 60% of the 2nd semester and 40% of the 1st, due to the shorter length of the 1st semester. We calculate GPA based on the final grades too. When evaluating my application, would colleges use the semester grades or the year-end grades to get a sense of where I stood in terms of GPA? I know I can definitely make straight A's for my final year end grades, but I might end up with a B+ in one of my classes for the Semester 1 grade.

Also - for those of you who might think I'm stressing over this too much - I already have several B's from 9th and 10th grade (3.8 UW), and during those years I attended a different school. At my previous school, they didn't provide a single final grade; just the grades for each semester. I want to make sure I don't have too many B's overall.

I’m not sure how relevant this is, but the year end grades are also used for determining class rank… does anybody have an opinion?

OK, never mind. I just asked my guidance counselor today, and it turns out that the semester grades aren’t even listed on the transcript, just the year end grades… so I’m fine for now haha.

Thanks anyway! :)

Guys, sorry to revive this thread, but it turns out that the situation in my first post is just the way I described it - all three grades (S1, S2, year end grade) will be shown on my transcript. Apparently the person I talked to was mistaken. I will very likely have a B+ in Calc AB for S1, but I’m pretty sure I can bring this up to an A- for the year end grade. I know colleges are going to take into account every grade that shows up on the transcript, but say I have a B+ for S1 and an A for S2, which translates into an A- for the end of the year. When recalculating my GPA, which grades will colleges use? Thanks in advance for your replies!

Bringing Up My Post (BUMP)

…no one?

I guess I’ll try rephrasing my question more succinctly then: will having an A- as the final grade lessen the impact of the B+ for the first semester grade? Once again, I realize that everything will be considered.

…bump. Anyone? I’m really starting to feel like the economics teacher from the film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, haha!

i have the same problem – my semester grades are B’s, but then 2nd semester I would shape up enough to have an A as a final grade. I’m pretty sure that final grades are what is seen by the college. In my school especially, since grades for final exams are calculated as part of the final grade in addition to semester one and two.

I’ve read somewhere on CC that, in general, the most significant grades are year grades. A few B’s here and there at the semester for an A student is a huge deal. If you have a big number of B’s at the semester, however, then it looks like you slack off a bit first semester and pull it all together at the last second–not the most flattering characteristic.

sounds better than starting fast and ending weaker
