Year off from spanish?

Hi all,

I’m going to keep this a little brief and general, but basically, is it frowned upon to take Spanish 3 (finish grammar education), then no world language for a year, then Spanish 4 (spanish culture)? I understand that it might be difficult to remember the language, but I intend to keep up with it by participating in the national spanish exam.

It’s not “frowned upon” but the student will find it difficult to catch up after a year.

@WhydidKDleave It would depend on why you are taking the year off and how many years of world language you wold have. Look at the colleges you are interested to see how many years of world language they recommend applicants have. If you are taking a year off because you are taking a rigorous schedule that would be an acceptable reason. If you are taking a year off and there is no sufficient reason justifying it, it may look like you are reducing your course load. You should speak to your college counselor to get his or her thoughts.

@paveyourpath @skieurope I wanted to double AP Chem with AP Physics, so I would have no room left in my schedule. I had no intention of just dropping the language, spanish is kind of fun

Sounds ok. Just make sure you’re able to do well in those sci APs, not over-reaching. And that the future schedule allows for Span 4, that no other conflicts will come up. (After you take AP chem and physics, what will be senior science?)

Is the natl exam prep something at your hs or you just think you’ll self study?

I have experience with this. I’m taking two languages (French and Spanish) and, due to scheduling conflicts, had to switch between them each year (both freshman year, just French sophomore, just Spanish junior, both senior year.) Overall, while it hasn’t been ideal, it’s been a great experience and I will have completed both curricula (thru level 5 literature) by the end of this year.

Your Spanish will suffer on the year off, no question. That being said, I didn’t find it to be terribly difficult to pick back up the next year. For me, the first week or two were rough, since I became unaccustomed to hearing/speaking my language during my year off. I’d forget basic grammatical structures and vocabulary words left and right. But after a week or so, my brain kicked back in gear and I was fine. It’s like riding a bike; you won’t lose knowledge – it’s all still there, just buried – but you will lose fluency. C’est la vie.

@WhydidKDleave Makes perfect sense. Good luck with the AP science classes. AP Chem and AP physics both difficult courses. As @lookingforward asked, what will be senior yer science? Don’t stretch yourself too thin.Good luck!

@paveyourpath @lookingforward my senior year sciences are AP Physics 2, AP Physics C: Mechanics, and AP Research, so I’ll still have more coursework to finish!

@ChasingMerit thank you for that insight! gives me a little more confidence!
