Applying to: (in order of desire)
UMich - Ann Arbor --- So far: Deferred w/o ACT score, subject test, or increase in rank & Weighted GPA. Personal rec from a faculty member at UMich :D.

Make sure to send that ACT score!! Other than that, its a toss up.

Unfortunately, I have to wait until the writing part is released to have it sent. I think. I am sending an update/letter of interest (I have already show interest by having my guidance counselor call me regional counselor). In the letter of interest, I’ll mention the ACT score I got … just for their reference because it worries me that it might take awhile.

Oh and for the reference, I’m saying that my GPA is a 3.94/4.0 unweighted or a 5.0/6.0 weighted (basically to get a 6.0, you would have to take all AP classes in high school). Oh. another thing: I graduate with 10 APs (6 this year). So far on AP exams I’ve gotten 5/5/4/4.

Yeah the ACT will probably help since UMich doesn’t superscore.

I hope you also applied to UNC. Being instate should give you a better chance there. Plus instate tuition at UNC is probably the best bargain in the country. But that being said, if you can get your ACT score in, you have a reasonable chance at UM.

Yeah, I am pretty pleased with the ACT. I think it’s a pretty significant change to my app. Oh, my English score is a 33, not a 32 if it matters. Should I submit the subject test scores?

And I did apply to UNC with legacy. My mom, dad, and brother are all UNC grads. I found UM more attractive to me, though.

UNC!!! even tho I’m a die-hard wolverine fan, we’re not worth out-of-state tuition when you have a very reputable public university in your backyard.

UNC is great, I agree. But I am considering declaring a music major/minor. UNC wouldn’t be good for that.

If money is no obstacle then UM is probably a better overall school, especially for music, than UNC. And sometimes it’s good to get away a little for school.

So did you apply and audition at the School of Music, which BTW, doesn’t have a minor? Because at the SOM its not you that declares it; it’s the foundation of admission.

If not, the form of BA major/minor offered at LSA is more liberal arts-oriented as opposed to professionally-oriented, and is not necessarily the kind of degree worth paying an extra $120,000 for over 4 years…

What is it you’d like to do with a music major, for example? That would help define fit.

If, however, what you meant is that you’ve applied/auditioned at UMich’s school of music for a BMUS, or music ed or even bachelor of musical arts, (or any of the theatre degrees for that matter) that’s a different story.

That said, UMich is a great school for students who want to pursue academics but also want to continue to have performance opportunities, because there is a very robust selection of EC theater/music/performance opportunities. So in the case of taking a minor in music, and having access to lessons in a top studio (behind the studio BM kids, then the SOM general kids, then LSA at large kids) it makes a certain amount of sense.

But for the price difference, if I were a parent helping you pay, I’d want you to instead dual degree for 5 years and get a professional music degree plus an LSA academic degree  Just sayin’

(PS My son is at the SOM, in case you couldn’t tell. PM me if you need info about the programs.)

I only applied LSA. And I agree that U-M is significantly more expensive that UNC-CH, but I do know that I want music in my life whether I chose to make it the center of my life or not. UNC cannot adequately provide that for me. I’m not sure enough to say I want to music major, though. I’m trying to get the best of both worlds, at this point. Plus the atmosphere and other (seemingly) trivial factors are more attractive to me there than at UNC-CH. Money shouldn’t be a problem as far as I know. Congrats to you and your son, by the way! The music school at UMich is really great. If I am accepted LSA to UMich, I might consider getting a dual degree. I really haven’t thought things over as well as I should’ve.

For an update, UMich downloaded my ACT plus Writing earlier today. I got an 11 on the writing portion. :3 I also sent a politely worded update and expression of UMich interest in an email to my regional counselor earlier this week. (monday). This might just be anxiety talking, but is it a bad thing that I’ve received no sort of response? I know that admissions officers are busy and all, so I’m trying not to worry about it.

Anyone else wanna weigh in?

This might not be the advice you’re looking for, but I hope it helps: remember that if for some reason you don’t get into Michigan, your high school stats are quite strong, and that puts you in a very good position to transfer to Michigan as a sophomore after a successful freshman year at another school.

This is not to say that you won’t get in now, but it really can’t hurt to keep in mind that if you just miss the cut of freshman admission, your strong GPA and test scores will help you a great deal if you want to transfer! Best of luck!

You definitely have a chance! Your stats are great. It just really depends on what school in UM you’re applying to. My SAT score was only 1990 (My math really lowered it) and my ACT was embarrassingly low, but since I was applying to their School of Art & Design, they didn’t put as much emphasis on that (judged on 50% school stats, 50% your submitted art portfolio), and I got in. Good luck! :)

Oh, my bad haha. I just read you applied to LSA. Your have good extracurriculars, so I think you still have a chance.

Congrats on UMich! haha, if I had any physical artistic ability, I’d totally have applied to that school. :stuck_out_tongue: alas, I’m LSA undecided. I think my scores are all decent, but there’s nothing stellar about my application. That worries me.

As a way of update, to share, my income bracket is ~150,000-180,000. :3 [ I have a slight concern with this, considering I only listed one parent’s income, which supports 5. 80,000/5 doesn’t look too hot. 180,000/6 is a little better. In any case, continue chancing. I THINK I am going to try to see what I can do about reporting my finances.

I am pretty sure U of M is need blind. It may even be on the website but if not just a call to the admissions office asking if they are need blind is all you have to do. Are you the poster thinking about UNC or U of M, and are interested in music/dance even though you didn’t want to apply to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance? We went to Campus Day on Monday and they made a point of saying that you can take classes in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance even if not enrolled in that school as long as you have the appropriate skill level/background. You probably knew that but just wanted to let you know in case you didn’t that you can take classes in that school.

I am that poster. And I know, I emailed the flute professor of the music school and I she gave me the ‘deets’. I adore the flute and she suggested that if I am accepted, I can take lessons from her as an LSA individual. :)
