Yes....Another Chances Thread

Hi all,

I am an International student, currently studying 12th Grade in a school which follows Indian curriculum CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).

I just wanted to know what my chances are in getting admission for Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering (which one do i have more chance in applying to).

I don’t have GPA grading in my school. The grading is purely based on marks obtained:
9th - 85% (maths-A, science-A, social studies-A, English-B, Hindi-B)
10th - 90% (maths-A, science-A, social studies-A, English-A, Hindi-B)
11th – 72%(maths-C, physics-A, chemistry-B, computer science-A, English-A)

I had also received a scholarship in grade 11 due to my academic excellence in grade 10. It is only offered to students who have passed out of grade 10 with really high grades in the Central Board of Secondary Examination. Approximately every year around 10 students receive such a scholarship.

ACTIVITIES :
1) Attended the Global Young Leaders’ Conference (GYLC) in Washington/New York this year.
2) Swimming
3) Singing
4) Made Robot for science exhibition which uses sensors to travel through a maze and then using LED’s to show the intensity of the light in its path.
5) Made a presentation on Periodic Table for the Science Exhibition in Grade 9 and a presentation on Tessellation for the Maths exhibition.
6) Helped the team in coming 3rd in an inter-school robot competition
7) Information Head in the school Anti-Smoking Committee in which a presentation is going to be made to the Grade 9 and 10 students on the Harmful effects of smoking, why we smoke, how to stop smoking and the harmful chemicals present in cigarettes and cigars.
8) Participant in the Duke of Edinburgh Scholarship Program
9) Certificate of distinction in the Green Olympiad which is an Olympiad based on knowledge of the environment.
10) I have been learning Indian Carnatic Music vocal for over 10 years and have given a 2 and half hour concert. Apart from this i have also received the First Class Distinction in the Carnatic Music Vocal Junior Exam (which is pretty tough to get).
11) I have also been learning Carnatic Music violin for over 4 years and have recently won 3rd place in the Inter-House Talent contest held in my school.
12) Recently participated in the Computer Olympiad.

SAT SCORES:
MATH - 730
CR – 600
W - 640

Gave the give SAT II's in November. Will get 700+ in Physics, Chem and Maths and hopefully if all goes well 750+.

Can't say much about the essays because i feel they are good but it depends on the adcoms view point.

Is it okay to send guidance counselor recommendation or Teacher recommendation to Georgia Technology even though they don't need one in the application.

I think You are in, with MATH - 730, 700+ in Physics, Chem and Maths and good ECs and also, International student. Yes, you are in!

I wanted to know if i would be applicable for the honors program because the Georgia Tech site mentions that i must have some college credit but my school does not offer any credits.

As mentioned by the site:

Eligibility

Students who enter the AE School during their freshman year (30 hours or less of AP/transfer credit) can be admitted to the program if they have completed no less than 48 total hours total (typically mid-sophomore year) with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher at GT.

AE transfer students who enter GT with more than 30 credit hours must complete at least 14 hours of coursework at GT, including at least 12 hours in technical subjects, with a GPA of 3.5 or greater.

Students cannot generally be admitted to the program once they have completed more than 80 hours towards their degree program.

Students are permitted to remain in program as long as their overall GPA does not drop below 3.5 for two consecutive terms.

Students must satisfactorily complete (e.g., grade S) the undergraduate research component of their degree (see 2 in next section) to remain in the program.

First, You need over 1400+ old SAT.

oh.....okay
thnx for the information

does Tech need SAT II's for admission into Engineering coz i got 740 in Chem, 710 in Physics and a low 650 in math.............and i dont want to send my Math scores

Just for admission, You do not need SATII, But 740 in Chem, 710 in Physics and 650 in math is not bad.

well i have a 4yr long research on string theory and one for QTF and AI relating the two. Iam from India too, but have the following scores:

SAT 1:
M: 670
CR: 440
W: 500

SAT 2:
Phy: 730
Maths 1: 630
Maths 2: 610

Also have 5 yr of robotic experience and a few international championships. Gave toefl and have 300/300 on cbt.

Should I apply to GA tech ever?

go for it, u dont have anything to lose, ure low SATs look as a result from a struggle with english, so you still have a shot.

Hi guys! I too am Indian and looking for Aerospace. I finished grade 12 this year. And here are my results:
Overall (CBSE 12) = 77%
SAT: Critical R.-560, Math-610, Writing-540
What are my chances at Purdue, Umich and Texas(Austin)?
Do you think my scores are too low to try for Ga Tech? I might retake the SAT on Jan 26. Do you think its a good idea?
Sorry for being n00bish!

You do have chance at Purdue.

What about UT Austin and U Mich? Do you think retaking the SAT(Jan 26) will help it? My ECs are medium.

I'd post in the UT and UM boards for useful answers to those questions. I've gotten pretty familiar with GT, and that's why I'm here. I know nothing about UT and UM, though maybe I'm just ignorant.

slipknot_rocks : I think UMich is a reach for you, considering the fact that your SAT scores are lower than mine and your 12th scores are not that great. But you are a sure shot for Purdue and a match/reach for UT Austin.

I can say that UMich is a reach because it is a reach for me too.

hi.im a CBSE student and i have just been promoted to 11.my % in 10th are
maths.85.4%
science.86%
english.84%
social science.82%
hindi.79.3%
can you please calculate my GPA from georgia tech, atlanta’s point of view and can you discuss my chances of getting in?and are you from GTech?please do suggest some respectable universities for me in the USA.

Holy sh it! A zombie from 4+ years back! It’s interesting to look back on how we thought about college now that we are getting out of it and becoming employees!

Sagnik, get a good SAT (>2200) and do some volunteer work, etc. and you will be fine for most universities. That said, what do you want to do?

I calculated a 2.8 GPA which gives you no chance for Tech, even with a 2200+. Sorry sagnik - slipknot, how’d you like Purdue? Still in AE?

Even after 4 years, Americans on this board still think there is only one educational system in the world. Sigh
Sag, ignore him. Get a 2200 and you’ll be fine. Admission guys evaluate each country’s applications separately. That said, 11th is boring BS but get the highest you can get and do some volunteer/community/anything that can make you interesting on paper while giving you some self satisfaction projects and you’ll be good. Of course, you could take part in some math/science/nerd contests that make you look like a serious academic if you want scholarships/ultra-nerd admissions (MIT, Caltech, etc.). Depends on whether you want Engg and in which field, if yes.

SLM: I’d like to like Purdue but I have .m syntax errors and a quarter-life crisis that need attention! That said, the fun parts of my life at Purdue were riotous. I can’t switch majors now so I’m just doing an Econ minor. I find financial management more interesting, GLOBAL (F U security clearance for a commercial aircraft) and more relevant for day to day life, so I am very much looking into it.

I do not believe we are able to do that since often times international grades are not easily converted to a 4.0 system (@slipknot_rocks: even though the 4.0 system is not the only one in the world, students need to be converted to a consistent system to make them comparable).

If you go here: [Georgia Institute of Technology :: Undergraduate Admission :: International Freshman Students](<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission) and select “Foreign Credit Evaluation”, you will see a list of companies that will convert your grades to a standard US grading scale. Once that is done, you will know your GPA and what colleges you can get into. You will need to do this conversion regardless for Georgia Tech (and most other schools).

If you want a quick guess at whether you’ll be admitted, talk to other students from your school who tool the same classes and earned the same grades. Other than that, I do not think we can be of much help.
