yet another chances thread . . .

i applied to andover last year , and got waitlisted based on ( i think ) my writing and my ssat . ( which was an 88% last year )
so i am applying for 10th .

this year my ssat scores = 95 % overall
97% verbal
90% math

my gpa is like a 3.96 only because i chose to take a non honors elective .
my courses this year are :
biology - A
geometry - A
freshman lit - A- cuz my teacher's a hard writing grader
history - A+
musical theater- A
latin ii - A

i've been taking latin for a few years .
history is one of my passions .
i love biology .

ecs :
i go to JHU CTY in the summer .
i've taken logic , model UN , introduction to lab sci , fast paced high school chemistry , and i'm taking neuroscience this year.

i have been indian dancing since i was 5 . 10 years of dance . good personal rec from my teacher

i play the flute in an ensemble out side school . i take private lessons and have been doing so since 4th grade.

my clubs at school :
science olympiad
debate
latin
math league
drama

i also volunteer at indian social events and at the library .

please tell me what you think .

What ethnicity are you and how were your essays this year? Are you applying for financial aid?

i am indian . & my essay included how i've changed since last year and was deeply personal and well written this year. ( it was about dance )
& i'm not applying for financial aid .

I think you have a great chance! My friend does Indian dancing. It's very interesting and unique. Congrats on the SSAT scores! Very good. =]

What schools are you applying to?

just andover . & thankss

I'd say you have a pretty good chance.

Since you are applying again, have you ever thought of the chance of getting accepted as a "ninth grade repeat?" Would you want this?

uhm . NO . just because i think 4 years of high school is enough for me .
i find repeating school really ironic cuz going to a new england prep school already means you are smart . why repeat school ?

haha I don't really understand why they make some students applying as current ninth graders to repeat. I was talking to a science teacher at Andover one day and he said that he had about 25-30 ninth grade repeats and they were generally the only ones who started with chemistry.

I know that some athletic prospects are asked to repeat 9th grade...giving what would otherwise be a 10th grade admission an extra year of eligibility.

I personally would love to repeat ninth grade if I applied as a tenth grader because not only does it give an extra year of extracurricular eligibily, but gives you another year of preparing for college, which can be quite beneficial.

i personally think 4 years is enough if you stay at a public high school for 9th . you would still be at the same entrance point as the others in 10th and parents wouldn't have to pay an extra 40 thous just because you feel the need to repeat a grade . for me , i think entering at 10th is fine . i can see why athletic candidates would repeat though .

I couldn't agree with you more, if in fact your public high school is teaching the quality education you want/need as opposed to my potential public high school. That, on the other hand is like going to the circus so that is why I would want to repeat. For you, I'm sure it's different. =]

well , i wouldn't say that my public high school is amazing . but it has APs and it has some amazing teachers and good-ish facilities . & i would be able to be at the top of my class there for the next three years if need be , you know ?

Well that's good. I come from a mediocre town so the public school system isn't all that great. I'd survive, but it just isn't the environment I want to be in within the next few years. Also, the teachers are always miserable and don't want to be there. They're not on contract so they do not stay one minute past school hours for questions or help. This is not a positive, healthy environment... Also, it's like moving the Earth to try to get a good morning or smile from them, no matter how pleasant you try to be. This is one of many reasons why I want Andover so much.

that's kinda what i thought about my public high school a litttle before i went . i didn't really have "andover passion " or whatever until i got my waitlist letter . i didn't really care , but i didn't expect to enjoy school . now i feel like i could do well anywhere , but andover gives me even more opportunities and an environment that could boost what i have . don't be too quick to judge your high school til you have gone there , you may find you were mistaken . i know i was . i found teachers who amaze me and drive me to do even more well in their classes .

to dancer:

if you want a more positive and more meaningful education,
why didnt you apply to more boarding schools?

andover is obviously a great one, but there other boarding schools that are totally awesome as well.

Well, I wasn't all that interested and didn't know much about boarding schools until late January when it was just about TOO late to start applying to more schools. If I don't get into Andover this year, I am going to apply to Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, and Brooks for 10th grade or for a 9th grade repeat. All I can do now is prepare for the worst and hope for the best...

oh . that explains it !
for me , i was exposed to family friends who went to andover ,
got waitlisted by andover , got admitted to andover . i had classmates competing to get in last year .
the only school i heard about was andover . in 7th grade my mother started giving me the story , " i want you to apply " and i was all , " are you kidding me ? i don't want to go to any preppy school ! " but now , i am the one who wants to go so badly .
