yet another help me choose!

so may 1st is less than three weeks away and i'm stuck between two schools: the college of nj and university of scranton

scranton's tuition is roughly $45k but i got $15k a year there plus an offer for to be in the special jesuit liberal arts honors college
since i live in nj, tcnj's tuition is around $24k and i got $1500 a year there
i will be majoring in journalism

when i visited tcnj the first time last year, i absolutely hated it (but my mother blamed it on the rain) so i obviously have to visit again. i'm only considering it because it's so cheap. it'd cost me an extra $32k to attend scranton for all four years. i liked scranton, but i'll probably visit it again too. lots of people from my school are attending tcnj & i don't like the idea of staying in jersey... but i'm not sure if it's worth the extra $32k (especially with this economy) to go to scranton.

if anyone has any comments or suggestions, please let me know. thank you so much!

also, scranton has religious ties and i’m not that religious of a person, so i’m not sure if i’ll be affected there. it’s only 2 hours from home, but i have family who lives 30 minutes away who have a spare bedroom for me & would be happy to have me at their house on some weekends.
tcnj is only 1 1/2 hours from home & if i wanted to go home on any given weekend, i could probably find a ride with any one of the kids from my school going there. i also have a bunch of close friends attending there, and i’m not sure how good of an idea this is.

You have two great choices! Congratulations on those acceptances!

We know several kids that go/have gone to TCNJ. Most of them like it and got a good education, one did not fare so well there.

Both of my kids ended up at Scranton. The SJLA is a phenomenal program with invitations issued to only the top 50-60 students in the incoming class. My D loved the challenge and it allowed her to double major. She loved being in class with the rest of the SJLA kids.

Neither of my kids is particularly religious and that has never been a problem. There are 2 theology classes required, but they are not to convert anyone.

What would your major be at Scranton? They do not have a journalism major, however there is a journalism track within the communications major.

Congratulations on your acceptances! My son is a TCNJ freshman and his girlfriend goes to Scranton with a merit scholarship similar to yours, I believe.

Both are very happy at their respective schools. My advice as a parent is to visit both again and see if you can do an overnight at both places. Then decide.

And go when the sun is shining!

I say go for TCNJ. It is a cheaper and better college. Don’t worry about it being small there is six thousand students there, odds are you won’t run into the 1 or 2 kids going from your school. Congrats on the acceptances and scholarships. Enjoy yourself!

to kitty56- currently i am a english major, but i’m planning on changing it to communications with a writing track if i do decide to go there

thank you very much for the advice :)

TCNJ is the better school and is less money. Don’t let one visit determine your impression.

Thanks for the advice vociferous!

welcome! :)
