Today was part of group that met with Josh Bolton, White House Chief of Staff, for 40 minutes. She found that interesting. Her group was only the second such that Bolton has met with. Then Karl Rove came in to see Bolton, not knowing a group of interns were there, and protocol required D to shake hands.

I muttered something about purification rituals. But still, a bird's eye experience.

S&P, yes, D is doing the Picker. She'd already been in the WH once previously this term. A year or two ago, a Smithie interned in the WH, working for Rove. Three of this year's Pickers are, in fact, [conservative by default] Republicans, demonstrating Smith's fealty to affrimative action in the best sense.

D is hoping to go back to D.C. to a different office next summer, using her Praxis money. I've even heard a rumble of a paid internship being a possibity, courtesy of the balance of power switching. (The are many perks for the Majority, virtually none for the Minority.)

D liked Josh Bolton quite a bit. And I find it interesting how well she's learned to listen, including between the lines.

"I've even heard a rumble of a paid internship being a possibity"

The Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program offers internships in Washington, D.C., in the fields of public policy and nonprofit management, as well as placements at state-based policy organizations across the country. The internship also includes:

Good added info, RLT. D is specifically looking on the Hill and more specifically to a certain House committee. You could say that she's done the advanced recon and moved to plans & operations.

$1.500 stipend ain't gonna be enough to survive on for the summer! :)

shudders JOSH BOLTON? I can't imagine how uncomfortable some of the more liberal Smithies felt :) But I went to see Andrew Card talk in 2005 and even though I was a small fish in a big pond of Republicans, I was SO excited to be seeing a staff member of the WH in person!!!

I don't think your D needs more encouragement from me to consider a summer in DC.

TMP, I think Praxis is $2,000. If an internship offers another $1,000 to $2,000, it should be okay financially. We'll find a way to make it work, whatever. TheMom and I were talking just a couple of days ago about having to budget law school and grad school application fees into our thinking for next year...at 10-15 schools/programs, that's going to add up.

Can't speak for others, but as I said earlier, D enjoyed listening to Bolton. However, D is just as far from being the most liberal Smithie as she is from being a Republican.

TheDad, I'm not sure if you're implying this or not, but you can't be paid for an internship AND use Praxis. It's one or the other.

This is the exception from the CDO website:

[quote]
Size of stipends for low-paid internships. If you will be paid a salary for your internship that is less than $2,000, you have the option of applying for reduced Praxis funding to supplement your employer-paid salary. The total amount of your employer-paid salary plus Praxis funding may not exceed $2,000, and you will not be eligible for any additional Praxis funds in the future.

Well...dang. Shows you have to read the fine print.

Thanks, Borgin. We'll plan on $2K max, one way or the other. I won't even mention this to my D at the moment...she's up to her eyebrows with the thesis paper.

That's why I meant :) The fine print. The best thing she can do is- either offer to do the internship unpaid or look for a better paid internship that pays over $2,000 (more than $9.21/hour, $300ish/week). That was the deal I was going to do had I stayed at Smith.
