I know I read something about College Confidnetial and Naviance being owned by the same company, but wasn't expecting this. There was a link on Naviance for more information on a college and when I clicked on it, there was my review from College Confidential, which I posted under "alphabetical list of colleges"

CC must have a very high opinion of your, um, opinion.

No, I guess they’re pulling remarks from the discussion threads on colleges. There was another college where several of us were discussing drinking on a certain campus. I wonder if that thread would have come up on Naviance. I bet it would have.

I don’t think most people realize (I know I didn’t) that the CC Terms of Service meant that their posts would appear on Naviance. It’s not explicitly noted in the TOS although certainly allowed for.

Interesting. I don’t post a lot here. This will limit my comments even further.

A comment that might mean one thing when framed by a threaded discussion could easily be misinterpreted standing on it’s own. Toledo, is it just your comment that you found or was it a reference to the entire thread?

It was the last thread posted about a college. I started the thread. It was about my tour experience. Another person asked me a question and gave his views on the college. The entire thread was posted. I’m glad it was a pleasant thread, but not all threads are so pleasant. I’m wondering if CC did this automatically or if they pick threads to link to Naviance.

When I looked up the larger college with the drinking thread, no threads came up. In the spot where the CC thread was posted, I found a description from the Fiske Guide.

In looking up another small college on Naviance, there was a CC thread titled, “Who is applying to X College for 2010?”

I noticed that this year Naviance now has links to CC. I don’t see any great need to worry about it. I know that everything I write here is able to be seen by anyone. They only include a snippet of the post with a link to the thread, so I think most people who are interested will end up reading the entire thread. It looks like they just post the latest threads since the current link for Georgetown is an entirely off topic thread.

With millions of visits per month, CC threads can be very visible in a variety of ways.

School-specific forum threads may be linked in Naviance screens, where they provide students and parents a way to hear what CC members have to say about school. Whole threads don’t show, just a link and snippet.

Naviance requires a secure login, while any CC thread is directly viewable from anywhere by anyone with Web access. If you don’t want people to see it, better not to post it…

Visit reports, by the way, are very popular content - people love to read and share campus experiences. (One reason for us setting up our dedicated [College Visits](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visits/) section.) Thanks for sharing yours!

I’d point out that this site is spidered thoroughly and frequently by Google – I often see very recent posts showing up near the top of results for a Google search. So basically what you post here is very likely to show up near the top, with the right search terms. Try a Google search for [superscore sat](<a href=“superscore sat - Google Search”>superscore sat - Google Search) for example.

It’s not just this board, though. NOTHING you post on the internet is private. Really. NOTHING. It gets posted, its there forever. Even if you think its a private board – requiring a password to access – YOU don’t have control of the board and whether it remains private, or know who else (or what else, in the case of a “bot” or search engine spider) might have access.

I learned about CC when I was using Naviance. It has “more information about this college” on the bottom of each school. Once, I even saw my own thread starter when I visted Naviance. I just wonder how much personal info I’ve shared. Gulp!

It just seems odd to put the comments from CC on Naviance. Naviance is so objective; test scores, application deadlines, scattergrams, etc. CC is very subjective; chances threads, opinions of campuses, personal stories.

Another thing I don’t like about it (admittedly selfish) is that everyone at my school uses Naviance, so it’s only a matter of time before they’re all over here. Time to change my screen name.

Thanks for the info. As long as the thread is referenced, and not just a snippet of a post, I don’t see any problem.

If you have a specific post that you are concerned about – I’d suggest that you identify the precise link and email one of the board moderators. I’m sure that CC would be willing to delete a post or edit out personal info on request from the user who made the post.
