Time to be “brutally honest”
Though ur GPA is pretty high, your class rank is more important. top 10% at a not-elite high school is not good enough to get u into Ivies or there equivalents, but it isls not bad enough to keep u out of them either. I’d say thats the weakest part of ur application, even though it is very solid. U usually have to be in at least the top 5%, but usually top 3% to get into Ivies or there equivalents.

Your extracurricular are solid but there kinda all over the place. If there is something that u r truly passionate about, emphasize it in ur essays.

Also, I understand that u havent finalized ur list yet…here are some suggestions:

I live really close to UW-Seattle and I spend a lot of time there and know a good amount about the university. Definitely apply there as a safet. It is a BEAUTIFUL campus, has AMAZING housing, and Seattle is an amazing place. Not to mention that the education is very good, even though its not Ivy. It’s also pretty cheap for an out-of-state. Consider applying to there Honors program as well.

Other than that, apply to all the UC’s and USC cuz ur in state, apply to Tufts and JHU as low reaches/high matches… consider applying to Northwestern, it is similar to the colleges u seem to be interested in

Make sure you understand Northeastern’s curriculum before u apply cuz it is VERY unique…u basically work for 6 months at a job, and then study for 6 yrs…make sure u r comfortable with a not-so-typical college life

Make sure you are comfortable with how HUGE UT-austin is…it almost has 50,000 undergrads!!!

Are you sure ur comfortable with NYU, and Columbia? The culture and enviornment in New York is vastly different the West Coast culture. Make sure u visit NY before you apply to and NY school imo.

DONT apply to Uchicago, unless u really like it; the application is really annoying and from my visit there, the enviornment is really meh

Choose ONE (maybe two) of the following colleges to apply to: Columbia, Brown, UPenn, UChicago (also consider applying to Duke, it is similar to the colleges u seem to be interested in).
The reason I tell you to only choose one or two is so you can put ur 100% effort in that college’s application, cuz honestly, anything less of a perfect essay will not get u into the Ivies with a 2210, 3.9, top 10%. If u apply to like 5 Ivies, u simply wont be able to put in ur 100% effort on ALL the applications, and u will most likely not get accepted to any so focus on ONE application and try applying early

GOOD LUCK!!! You are very smart and well-rounded, you will succeed wherever you go!!

Chance me Back: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1673885-chance-me-northwestern-duke-wustl-upenn-jhu-usc-ucla-berkeley-u-of-washington.html#latest</a>
I am very similar to you haha

@sgopal2
Many thanks for the feedback!
Yep–I am definitely not the strongest applicant number-wise, nor in any category for that matter! While I did have quite a few scheduling conflicts that prevented me from taking some AP’s, for the most part I chose not to take them on my own. Perhaps that was a bad move on my part (in terms of getting into selective universities) but even so, I have no regrets. I didn’t want to take difficult classes I wasn’t interested in. :)

You are most certainly correct on that too—nothing on my resume is related to computer science. That will definitely hurt. I didn’t realize what I wanted to do until just two months ago, so it was much too late to do anything about it. :frowning:

@bigboyoncampus‌
YES, thank you, brutal honesty is exactly what I am looking for! I’ll definitely chance you back.
I do realize that my list was overly ambitious, and I’ll definitely cut it back to something more practical. Out of all the ivies + UChicago, the only one I’m going to apply to is Brown since it’s the one I am most genuinely interested in.

You’re right-- UT’s 50k undergrad population is much too extreme for me (clearly I need to do more research! :P) I’m visiting the east coast in a couple weeks to check out the schools on my list and see if they are the right fit. As for Northeastern, their unique curriculum is actually what attracted me in the first place (co-ops = excellent opportunities for professional experience before graduation!)

You actually have a chance at many of the schools you’ve listed. Make sure you shorten your list sooner than later. Good gpa, decent SAT score, but not so great SAT 2 scores, particularly since you’re majoring in Comp sci. You don’t show many leadership skills nor do you have sports to make you seem well rounded. Make sure you work on ECs involving comp sci/math/science because colleges won’t be impressed by your current ECs because of your major. are in CA?

Please chance back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1672761-chance-me-for-stanford-university.html</a></p>

@lb43823

1) Nice, thanks for the links! The third one is especially helpful in determining the differences between a BA and a BS. Based on that info, I think I’m gonna shoot for a BA.

3) Oh gosh, I don’t think you wanna hear that! I mean, unless you want to go deaf. In fact, I attempted cello for a few months after quitting violin-- a tiny bit more successful except for the dying whale noise every now and then. God only knows what would happen if I tried double bass! It’s probably for the best (for me and everyone within hearing distance) if I just avoid all string instruments altogether. :D

4) No worries, if everything goes wrong and I don’t get in to any of the colleges I applied to, I’ll just blame it entirely on someone who I’ve never met and is on the opposite side of the continent. Yep, good plan. :P

5) Nahhh, West Coast = BEST coast!! East Coast = uhh… least coast? I’m terrible at rhyming.

6) Alright, after reading that, now I really need to enter the divine realm of coding! What would you say is the most useful programming language? Although I guess that is kind of a subjective question… most flexible one maybe?
You learned R in a single month??? What?? Man. Wow. I guess it becomes easier once you grasp the basic concepts of general code? If only regular languages were that easy-- sometimes I feel like I don’t even know English. :P

@Dream0n thanks for the tips, I’ll chance you back right now! I’ll definitely work on raising the SAT 2 scores and orient EC’s towards something related to math/science/computer science. And yep, I’m in CA so hopefully that’ll help my chances of getting into a UC. :slight_smile:

@lumilie‌

1) Okay good.

3) I do. Upload it. I am not kidding. Link me to it. And lol cello, a dying whale LOL that made me laugh for five minutes.

4) I’m sorry. I totally understand why you would do that. I am just such a bad advice giver *cries in the corner
5) There are 2 coasts. 2. Best of 2? Puh-lease, girl. Wait sorry remind me, what’s your favorite school again? Brown, right…hmm wonder where it’s located… And work on your rhyming, it’s so bad that it’s sad and it makes this lad a tad lad who’s had enough. I know I should win an award. Even upstaged Dr. Seuss right there.

6) Okay I’ll be serious now…even though it’s fun teasing you and I barely know you.

Most useful: Depends what you are doing. With R I can handle gigabytes of genomic cancer data and manipulate it like childplay. Seriously, it’s amazing. If you’re doing anything with user interaction/GUI/applications, I don’t think it is even possible to use R. R is extremely extremely limited, but is the go to for data handling, graphing, statistical handling, analysis. It is the language of statistics. Java on the other hand can do anything. Here is an example:

Find the average of a few numbers.

R

numbers <- c(10,20,30,30,30)
mean(numbers).

The console with spit out the answer. 24.
You can even shorten it as such: mean( c(10,20,30,30,30)). Yeah…it’s that easy.

Notice the lack of semicolons!!! That’s right no need for semicolons!!! WOOOOO! And ifs a command based language. Basically I can type one line at a time and run it. So I know exactly where the error is!!! Painless debugging!!!

Java. Let’s make everything more complicated cuz we can!

public class HiLumilieYoureMyBestFriendEverAndICanNameThisWhateverIWantSoI_Will {

public static void main (String [] args) {
int [] numbers = {10, 20, 30, 30, 30}
int average = mean(numbers);
System.out.println(average);
}
public static int mean(int [] numbers) {
sum = 0;
for (int i : numbers) {
sum += i;
}
return(sum/numbers.length)
}
}

Yes. Dumb.

I like you. You’re an entertaining person.

@lb43823 Back at ya! :D

3) Hahaha okay okay I’ll do it if I manage to convince someone to lend me their violin (assuming they won’t run away while covering their ears of course! :P)

4) Yep, you should be ashamed of yourself. Tsk tsk tsk. My entire universe is in jeopardy because of you.

5) Woah woah woah there buddy, hold up. Brown may be on the (L)east coast but don’t let that get to your head-- the west coast beats the east in every other possible way. Yep, better weather, better food, better everything. You can’t deny it. Once you visit the west, you’ll be blown away by its sheer magnificence. Period.

Nope, I’d wager that Dr. Seuss would actually be ashamed of your obscene rhyming. Out of pity I might give you the title of the better rhymer… except I can’t ignore the fact that my rhymes are stacked and and my act is backed with an intact pact so don’t overreact when I distract you with my tact. Word. B-)

6) Woah!!! Woah. You just typed out a bunch of code like it was the easiest thing in the world. Woah. I just… woah. It was probably simple for you since you know it all already but both R and Java look alien to me so it was actually really cool. Woah!!!

Your stats are really impressive and so are your ECs! It would be better to show some EC interest in comp sic but if you let your passion come through in your essays that would definitely help. Your activities and awards are well-rounded and interesting, and I think you have a good shot of getting into any of your schools, it just depends on your essays and finding what sets you apart from other applicants. I would qualify your schools as.

@lumilie

3) Good. I am giving you two weeks. Don’t let me down. And you better do it. OR ELSE!

4) Yeah, now you’re not getting into an Ivy League and are never ever going to find a job, and you’re going to be unemployed. Then you’re going to have no money and live as a hobo on the streets. Yep I have it all planned!!! I shall ruin your lifeeeeee! :D

5) You know I had said I never went west? Well that was a half lie. I have never been to California. Been to Seattle though.

Better weather? Depends. I live on Long Island, by the water. Do you live 15 minutes to the water? Hmm? Hmm? Well do ya?

Better food? Have you seen New York City? NYC - the cultural capital of the world!! The world, lumilie, THE WORLD!!!

Lemme call up Brown and tell them lumilie just bashed their region.

Wow little girl, good job! Look who can rhyme! Aww so cute :)

6) Don’t worry you’ll get there one day, maybe. Probably not. My awesome naming skills (for example, the class name in Java example) is too great for you. Bow down to my superior coding skills. :stuck_out_tongue: I am just kidding. But seriously, HiLumilieYoureMyBestFriendEverAndICanNameThisWhateverIWantSoI_Will, is a great name. Even though it has absolutely nothing to do with finding averages of numbers.

CS at UDub is incredibly hard to get into as an OOSer. UT-Austin isn’t a safety either (due to the top x% rule).

You should start eliminating schools NOW unless you want to write 15+ supplemental essays. Try to create a college “ideal” and create cohesion around that. For example, Brown/Columbia and USC/Chicago should never be in college lists together.

http://www.cs.washington.edu/prospective_students/undergrad/admissions/direct_admission/</a></p>

@loquatical‌

Why should those pairs never be in the sample college list?

@lb43823‌ OP mentioned that she’s applying to Columbia College, so she’ll have to complete the Core Curriculum. Brown prides itself on its open curriculum. USC has a party school reputation w/ sports worship, while Chicago tries to push a quirky and intellectual feel (just look at the application essays). Although there are shut-ins at USC and raging parties at Chicago, the same person probably prefers one over the other.

@lb43823

3) Two weeks?!?! Well, I am currently in the middle of nowhere so hopefully someone else who is also in the middle of nowhere will happen to have a violin on hand. Because that is totally the normal thing to do.

4) Psh, you can’t tell me how to live. Either way, if that does end up happening, then no job = no responsibility = freedom. I will be free from the burdensome chains of this capitalistic society at last!! Muahahahaaaa!!!

5) Psh, okay well maybe I don’t live 15 minutes from the beach. But it also depends on how you define “living near the water.” Does a creek count? Technically, I live 2 minutes from the “water.” :smiley:
And okay fine, I admit that NYC probably has good food. Probably. Not that I really know though… yet. But the singular cultural capital of the WORLD? Now that’s pushing it a little too far. There are plenty of other metropolises that rival NYC (SF, anyone?)

6) Indeed, that class name is a true masterpiece. That shall be your legacy, your opus magnum. Print it out and frame it and display it for the world to see and I promise whole world will flock to you and bow down to your skills. Meanwhile, as you are busy advertising your legendary class name, I will be catching up to your coding skills to claim the title as the superior coder. You better watch out!! :P

@loquatical‌ Thanks so much for the insight! You made a lot of valid points that I didn’t consider thoroughly before reading your comment. I realize now that there were a lot of colleges on my list that weren’t quite compatible and have crossed off several as a result. I’ve decided not to apply to USC & U Chicago altogether but I’m still considering Brown and Columbia (despite their different curricula). Do you know of any other colleges on my list with clashing personalities?

@lumilie You’re totally just considering Columbia so you can meet me of course, since thats the school I will most likely ED to, and hopefully get into. I mean who wouldn’t wanna meet this guy? :P

@lumilie

3) Middle of nowhere? Nowhere is a city in Oklahoma. Nowhere, Oklahoma. <a href=“Nowhere, Oklahoma - Wikipedia”>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowhere,_Oklahoma</a>. So hows the town hall of Nowhere? :PPP. Fine, I’ll give 2 weeks and one WHOLE day extra, because you’re my bestest buddy ever lumilie! I know, quite generous. Oh you should come to NY and I’ll give you my violin (although I think I broke the bridge -_-)

4) Honestly in all seriousness…this race in high school (better grades, better SAT, better ECs) pisses me off. So many people do it just for one reason, or chain: Good grades + good SAT + good ECs (+ nonAsian helps :P) = good college = good job = good money = good family = happy (wo)man. But, honestly, everyone’s happiness is different. People should be able to live by what they are passionate about - what they love to do (as long as it isn’t unproductive and/or terrorism).

And you seem to hate capitalism…AND YOU’RE ASIAN. Like Chinese Asian!! Which means you’re a communist obviously! :P

No but seriously, screw capitalism!!! LETS LIVE LIKE HOBOS ON THE STREETS TOGETHER!!! WOOOOO!!! MEET YOU IN NYC!

5) Creeks do not count. Don’t be jelly, west coast girl.
And ask any number of people around the world. New York it will be.
<a href=“Global city - Wikipedia”>Global city - Wikipedia. NY and London (in fact, both my home cities, as I lived in London) are considered the two most powerful cultural economic cities in the world. Tokyo, also in my opinion should be among them - if not the greatest. Hong Kong, Shanghai, Paris, Seoul, Sinagpore, Dubai pretty solid too.
h you should come to NY and I’ll give you my violin (although I think I broke the bridge --)
But SF psh, thats a city for scrubs.Nah I am just kidding.SF is nice too, so Ive heard. But here is something interesting I started actually geh you should come to NY and I’ll give you my violin (although I think I broke the bridge --)tting interested in (even though my original purpose was just to annoy you :P) http://travel.cnn.com/explorations/life/worlds-best-cities-culture-vultures-832691</a></p>

6) Are you mocking me, peasant? I’ll write a computer program that creates a fighting robot (out of thin air - bc that is totally possible) and is programmed to hunt lumilie down and teach you a lesson!

And that’s great! If you surpass me, will you teach me, sensei?

PS…I really really REALLY need friends -_-
