I was just accepted to Yonsei UIC for fall 2016 (Class of 2016.5) and I was wondering if there are any others out there entering this year in either March or September.
I’m from America, currently attend a boarding school in PA, and I am entering into the Underwood Division.
Thanks!
I know a few Underwood students (and a prof) as well as some students from Yonsei proper, but I’m in Seoul, after all.
My daughter just received her acceptance letter also. I was wondering if anyone received scholarship information with their acceptance letter? Or does that normally come later?
Never heard of this college before but I would love to go to a college korea that speaks only English lol.
The app isn’t due till March 24 really? Sweet but are they like other schools outside the US where the SAT, Subject tests, and AP scores are really important? Mine sucks but my GPA is high but I heard international schools don’t really take importance in GPA?
I also got my scholarship letter. I am getting half scholarship. The information was sent in an email about 30 minutes later
The March deadline is a bit harder apparently. UIC doesn’t give out much information on their general applicant pool, so I don’t really know much about the standardized test scores for students. You can only give them the SAT and SAT2 directly as they are not registered for receiving score reports for ACT. I don’t actually have a GPA since my school doesn’t believe they are worth anything but we do have to estimate sometimes and I believe that mine is a 3.6 on a 4.0 scale if that gives you any information. In my opinion, while not required, the scores count as they are verified documents of your performance
I have also been accepted to UIC Yonsei this fall (Class of 2016.5)
Other than the scholarships the university gives, are there any other government scholarships/grants (both from the US and S Korea) opportunities for international students? Is there any sort of financial aid coverage for US students studying at a foreign institute? I’m trying to lower my tuition cost as much as I can.
also, I’m sure we’ll be getting more information about registration, dorming, roommates, etc… but would it be a good idea if we created a FB page for the class of 2016.5? That way we can get to know each other, and help each other out in this stressful yet exciting journey! haha
Well congrats! I hope you enjoy Korea.
축하해요
Yeah. I think I’m going to start a page (if no one else does) around may when people in the US at least are finalizing decisions, the 3rd round students are finalized, and when Yonsei starts to send us more info
I have applied for some scholarships but they’re all private. I haven’t done much research into in so far because I’m still waiting for some information and offers from some other colleges (to make my parents happy). I also already go to private school so we have some stuff from paying for that that could be used but it wouldn’t help anyone else out
To anyone on here starting at UIC in the fall, I’m going to create a facebook page later today for our class. Send me a personal message with your email or name on Facebook and I can add you once I create it.
What’s the FB group page called?
I can’t make the group without at least one friend so it won’t actually let me yet. If you want to start it with me just send me a message with your name or email you use for facebook
I make the group now. It’s called Yonsei University Underwood International College 2016.5
It is written on the admission letter if a scholarship is awarded. Scholarships seem to be awarded only to students who are in top 1% in their country and only from the best high schools of their country.
UIC does heavy recruiting and marketing trips in SE Asia and is very attractive college among SE Asian students. Most of the admission scholarships go to SE Asians. The best Western students decide to study in America or Europe and therefore there are not many Westerners with an admission scholarship.
Actually many Western UIC students are quite dissatisfied with the school and some even leave during their freshamn year. You may want to read UIC’s wikipedia page and this article https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/03/17/foreign-academics-report-difficulties-working-leading-south-korean-university.
I would recommend to come to UIC only if you have been awarded with an admission scholarship.
If you read the article you posted, it is talking about faculty and not students
@lilibird As a student here, I have witnessed both students and faculty leaving the college. The article I posted is only about the faculty, but an interesting article could be written about the students as well.
Since you have an admission scholarship, I guess you won’t care about the flaws. However, if you got into SNU or Korea, think twice before coming here.
I get your point, but this is a forum for people who have been accepted and most of us are committed already anyway. I get your need to advise people but people who have already signed on are not your target audience
As a Western student who left UIC after two semesters, I have to agree with the point that UIC’s scholarship policy is quite strange. While Western are already the minority (I would estimate less than 5% of all UIC students), it is weird that almost none of these students get an admission scholarship. This was also one of the many reasons which led to my decision to leave Korea and continue my university education in Europe.
Hello. I’m considering applying to UIC. I wanted to speak personally with a Western UIC student to find out what life is like there for you. Would you be willing?
