I'm an HS junior, and I want to go to Columbia more than anything. I'm going to major in creative writing in college, and their program is the best in the nation. However, my numbers are crap.

I'm going to have a 95 weighted average, taken 9 AP classes, and will probably get a 2000-2100 on the SAT. All of those are slightly below the average for admissions into Columbia, I'm pretty sure. And they reject people with much higher.

But, I'm president of my school's Literary Magazine and Book Club. I'm an editor for Polyphony HS, a national student run literary magazine. I've gotten my poetry and short stories published in three different national literary magazines. I also play the flute for the school wind ensemble.

Do you think I even have a chance? I'm thinking about applying ED, because if I don't apply then, I'm sure I don't have any chance at getting in. But for all my other chances I have much more reasonable schools that I know would accept me... (Bard, Connecticut College, etc)

You are definitely pragmatic in realizing your objective academic stats are on the lower end. However, you demonstrate passion for your interests through your ECs and certainly have a healthy course load. You definitely have a chance, but I wouldn’t say it is a good one.

it actually doesdn’t look that bad, maybe do some prep to bounce the SAT’s higher, and try to get an 800 on the writing…take some english type SAT II’s as well, that said, you have a healthy courseload and your EC’s look pretty amazing, take a shot, I don’t even need to tell you to write good essays:)

well its a strech but not a huge one. The fact is that your numbers aren’t great. Where do you rank in your class? because i’m not sure where a 95 weighted would stand. Also, by taking AP exams and SAT IIs you can make up for a lower GPA by showing that you have mastered these subjects, and that maybe you just didn’t try as much in class as you should have. You really need to try to get your SATs to 2200- again can make up for a lower gpa.
I say go early decision-it’s your best bet especially since it seems like you really want to go there. Your extra curriculars are great & very focused which shows that you are passionate about writing. And if you can get excellent recs and write excellent essays you have a decent chance.

My opinion is YES i think you can get in. Your gpa and sat scores are actually very above average and your ec’s and awards show that you work hard at what you are interested in. I wish i could say i am sure that i know you will be accepted, but i personally think you have a good chance. Good Luck!!

Your average percent grade doesn’t matter as much as your grades in individual classes or your rank.

Your best bet is to study, study, study for the SAT and SAT IIs. If you can get it 2250+, I think your chances of admission will be significantly increased.
