You’d think that parents would know better than to order basketball jerseys printed with the stuff that they were printed with…
This is beyond horrible. How many parents allowed this to happen? Referees? Coaches? This was the THIRD game they played in. It’s absolutely shameful.
Deplorable.
Shame on all everyone affiliated with the team. I’m glad they were kicked out of the league.
But but but white supremacy and racism are myths in the 21st century!
It is disturbing beyond words that this was allowed to go on for WEEKS before someone brought it to the attention of people who could do something about it.
Didn’t even ONE parent on that team raise a complaint?
Another non-apology. “We sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by the jerseys.”
How about, “We sincerely apologize that we are such horribly offensive people that we ordered and paid for these jerseys, then put them on our kids.” It is not the jersey’s fault, people.
^^Along the lines of “Mistakes were made.” Nope, you consciously chose to do the wrong thing.
No doubt the parents of that team are bitterly complaining about PC culture and snowflakes being offended by a harmless joke.
I wonder if they’d be offended if their kids had to wear jerseys for the rest of the season that said Wyatt T Rash. Just a harmless joke.
Imagine the mom or dad washing the uniform that said knee grow on it and thinking that was ok. The team played 3 or 4 games before they were stopped.
How about whichever parent(s) put in the order for the printing on the jerseys? After all, this was a youth team, so parents have to be involved with it.
Brought this up with my neighbor who has been involved in youth basketball for years (his son is on a D1 Basketball scholarship and until recently he reffed high school basketball so I knew he’d be aware of it). He pointed out that there is one other group of adults that is complicit in this whole thing - the refs. They could have - and should have - shut this team down the minute they first walked on to the court with those things on their jerseys. They are the final authority on what happens on the court. Individual players can be kicked off for uttering racial slurs or threatening another player, so can entire teams. (My neighbor actually did kick an entire team off the court once for taunting and insulting the opposing team.)
Has it been established that the team actually wore those jerseys for the first three games?
^^
I was thinking the same thing. Just unbelievable to me that all the parents of those players would have gone along with this stupidity. You figure there is always one or two in a crowd but a whole team with parents like this?
The coach should not be coaching – I would not want someone like this interacting with my son.
I know beyond question that I would never, ever, ever have allowed my child to put such a jersey on his or her body. Never. I also would never have allowed my child to participate in a team with that name.
Aren’t parents supposed to be role models? To set standards? To establish values for their families?
For shame.
Actually here is an update that confirms they did wear the jerseys the first 3 games. Unbelievable.
@My3Kiddos Spot on: refs control what happens on every court. They can say turn 'em inside out or go home and then report it to the league.
On the other hand, there’s no way this wasn’t noticed immediately when jerseys were issued, or when they stepped on the court the first time, or even when a team called the “Wet Dream Team” submitted that name to league officials. There’s a lot of culpability to go around here.
Did I read in the original article that the “apology” issued wasn’t actually written by the coach, and that he has not commented? Or did I read that elsewhere?
The apology I read had the coaches name under it – Walt Gill. The only other statement he made was telling a local news station that called his home that “this whole thing is being blown out of proportion.” Seriously, that is what he reportedly said.
