Yes. The coach contends the names printed on the jerseys were variations of the players’ surnames. He was also quoted by a local TV station as stating that “this whole thing is being blown out of proportion.”
After being removed from the league the coach sent an email saying “I don’t think the situation was handled correctly.” He went on to request that 65% of the money they spent be returned to the team and their parents. I would not be at all surprised if this demand includes the cost of the jerseys. It has also come to light that the coach ran the name of the team by the organization’s coordinator and was told he could not use that team name. The name showed up on the jerseys anyway.
As to the parents and team members I think their silence is deafening.
it’s a bunch of privileged boys who didnt make their high school team, who drive themselves to their rec league to play a game that no parents watch. They are idiots and racist.
I’m guessing the parents had no idea about these jerseys, and i can’t blame the parents here for the jerseys. HS boys play in rec leagues all the time without parental involvement. Once a kid drives, parents don’t go to these non-competitive games; the parents were probably just glad their kids were doing something, without knowing all the details or what the kids were planning.
now the attitudes; those come from parents, class-mates, neighbors, the school atmosphere.
I don’t believe the parents didn’t know or didn’t watch the games. I know a parent whose child played in that league (different school). She said the majority of parents did come to the games.
When D1 quit competitive club soccer and joined a rec league, we still went to every game. You don’t lose interest in your child just because they aren’t playing in the big time anymore. Of course there were parents of those kids at the games. Maybe not every parent of every child, but some, or maybe even most. Stop making excuses for this.
