Youngarts 2019-2020

Congrats to all on your accomplishments! My son is a second time merit winner in jazz/guitar. It is his last year of eligibility and he did not make it into the NY regional program last year. This year, unfortunately, the regional programs conflict with his school schedule which is a shame given what I have heard about how valuable the regional programs are.

Merit in film. My student’s email says that the results of the regional lottery will be notified December 11th. Congrats to everyone
but keep this in mind. This is just one award
one recognition and like everything it is subjective. My student has submitted several times, won other large national awards for the same pieces of art and been overlooked by YoungArts. Congrats to everyone and good luck to all merit/HM winners on winning the lottery, LOL.

@AmyIzzy: thank you so much, and huge congrats to your daughter! my email says that “Determinations will be made by December 11 and you will be notified of your status via email.”

@user222: mine was sent 11:56 a.m. my time, which is almost 2:00 p.m. (est)!

@fan4luc: congrats to your daughter as well! clearly, this thread is home to some very talented students (and/or their parents ha). as i understand it, she still would not be able to attend a regional program (because she has had the experience of attending a regional week, regardless of where it is, and i’m sure they’d like to leave room for students who’ve never had the chance), but i’d recommend double-checking with YA! congrats to her again

My son got HM as singer/songwriter

do all of the emails come out at the same time? or throughout the afternoon?

HM in voice

any theatre hm/merit?

i have given up hope ?

Yeah, wouldn’t count it out yet but majority of winners are notified I think.

I just called them. They said emails are sent it batches and not all at once.

@user222 The time stamp was 12:51pm CST. Looks like most were around that time but not all at exactly the same time.

@gmfalv - emails are not in one big bulk. They are still coming.

@SAYSA thanks for calling! not giving up hope yet!

havent heard anyone getting notified in dance

Ok - for clarification I called again. They said, all winners have been notified for HM and Merit. It was all sent at the same time.

Disappointed but at least it was quick.

I don’t understand why they won’t just publish results if they are done! What are they waiting for? This is a really badly managed process!

Well thats too bad but hopefully ill have better luck for other competitions

I’m a little disappointed, but I guess I kind of saw it coming. My stories are not the kind Youngarts typically awards, so I didn’t really expect to win anyway. I will say, however, that I grow more and more disappointed in the contest every year. The stretched out notification process seems manipulative, and frankly a little cruel. Still, I’d like to wish good luck to all of the winners! Super big congratulations to you all! Fellow non-winners --no need to give up here. This is a high school contest, one of many, and not winning it says nothing about the quality of your art, or about your future as a creator. Keep working, and I hope to see all of y’all entering next year!

@FlameAlchemist echoing everything you said. To share a little bit about my own experiences - I am not a writer. I submitted to Creative Nonfiction this year expecting absolutely nothing, considering I had submitted one of the same pieces to Scholastic last year and didn’t even make it to nationals. I had no hopes for YoungArts considering it’s SO much more competitive, and I wind up with an Honorable Mention. Meanwhile, in dance, for which I made it to the last rounds of judging and received a feedback email for last year, I didn’t win anything this year, despite making MASSIVE improvements. This shows you just how subjective YoungArts truly is! Your work may have won if it were simply judged another time, another day, another year. This does not say anything about your promise or talent as an artist. Congratulations to all of the winners, and to everyone that submitted this year. A considerable amount of hard work and heart went into all of your submissions, and you should be proud to have had the courage to submit at all. <3

I’m so sad I applied in poetry and I thought I actually had a chance
