I applied for poetry and Iām so nervous ā I hope it comes out early next week like Monday!!!
My daughter won honorable mention for Popular Voice last year and was lucky enough to participate in the New York Regional Week. What an experience!
Last year, I believe most Finalists were notified by phone on either Wednesday 11/14 or Thursday 11/15. Most Honorable Mention and Merit winners were emailed on those same days 11/14 or 11/15. However, there were many exceptions due to some major organizational glitches and some notices going to junk mail, etc. (check your junk mail!) There was also a āmistakeā email send by a college to anyone who applied implying they won but were actually just part of the database of applications. This got many hopes up only to come crashing down that same day! Horrible!
It appears they are really trying to do a better job with the schedule of notification they posted. Although it is āsubject to changeā Iām sure they will do their best to follow it and avoid getting a million phone calls like last year. So it appears that Finalists will still be notified by phone (and maybe also by email?) by late next week. The HM and Merit emails would follow about 2 weeks later (last week of November.) So if you donāt get a call by late next week, donāt fret. You could still be in the running for HM and Merit!
If you read through last yearās thread, you will understand the chaos and confusion many experienced last year! It was a torturous process for sure! So Iām really glad they appear to have a better, more transparent process in place.
Last year, I recall that they received about 8000 applications and they selected about 10% as winners. This was the breakdown for 2018-2019:
781 awards (some won in more than one category)
757 winners:
-171 Finalists
-270 Honorable Mention
-340 Merit
So itās extremely competitive but keep the faith! Best of luck to all of you!
I got Merit last year and got an email on November 11th. Many people that I know got emails even earlier. On the YoungArts website it says that they start calling Finalists the fifth week of application review. Today would mark the start of that week. Notification time also depends on which discipline you apply for as some tend to come out earlier than others. Good luck to everyone.
Hey everyone! I ghosted last yearās forum, and it was really nice to see all of the support that you guys had for each other, so I thought I should join this year and add to it :))) I applied in dance this season and last season - I received a feedback email last year, so I really hope that I end up winning at some level this year, because I think Iāve improved in leaps and bounds. Obviously, there are a lot of other factors at play other than just the quality of our auditions, so Iām tempering that hope a little bit. I hope all of us end up with the outcomes weāre hoping, good luck to all of you!
@bassman81 Out of curiosity (and overwhelming nervousness) which category did you apply for?
@DesiDancing Good luck!!
Also, for anyone else on this forumāif I had an uncaught typo (just a singular one) in the twenty-page novel sample I submitted to YoungArts, would that instantly void any chance of winning an award?
@Tersina thank you!!
Also, has anyone heard of any notifications going out yet? I have a feeling theyāre only going to start on Monday (maybe even thatās optimistic seeing that the timeline is āsubject to changeā) since their office is closed on the weekends. Iām thinking about this way too much omg
@Tersina Classical Music.
Hello! This is my first year submitting to YoungArts so I thought Iād join in and talk on this forum. Iām really worried about my chances though, since I submitted the wrong birth certificate in my application. YoungArts was kind enough to email me about the mishap and let me send in the right one, but Iām really worried that mistake ruined my chances of getting in. Iām applying under the script category, and at this point I just want them to rip off the band-aid and just let us know if we made it in already.
@NicoPlayWright Iām fairly certain that YoungArts practices blind adjudication, so I wouldnāt worry about how much your birth certificate is going to affect your chances. It really just seems to be for legitimacy purposes that they ask you to send one in. Even so, it was an honest mistake - thereās no way it would be taken seriously enough to disqualify your merit as an artist
@DesiDancing Thank you so much for those kind words, but my brain is still going to make me worry about it, lol. Oh well, hopefully school can distract me for the rest of the week but I highly doubt it.
So, in the case any one of us make it in, if you get a call saying your a winner in the middle of class, do you have a plan for what to do? So far mine is to jump out of my seat and straight into an empty hallway so Iād be able to hear the person on the phone. Hopefully my teachers will forgive me if it does happen, but if they donāt then at least getting in trouble would have been worth it.
@bassman81 Woah, congrats!!
@NicoPlayWright Good luck, fellow writer~. Try and start a new script (or do your homework!!) to ease the nerves.
I unfortunately donāt have my own phone number, so I wrote down my dadās (who is now on a business meeting in Chinaālong story short, weāre pretty bad at communication). Iām hoping to simply receive merit or honorable mention to save myself the nervousness of waiting for my dad to return. Haā¦
Also, since Veterans Day is a federal holiday, I donāt think theyāll start notifying winners until tomorrow.
@Tersina ohh, I didnāt think about Veteranās Day. Youāre probably right (of course, thatās not going to keep me from thinking about this obsessively all day anyhow)
@Tersina, thanks for the advice! I canāt focus that well, so Iāve stuck to finishing one of my scripts for Nanowrimo. Iām sorry you wonāt be able to check if you get a phone call. Iām hoping your right about the federal holiday thing, but I also hope your wrong because Iām just so curious about results. Iāve been keeping a death grip on my phone all day, lol.
Guys, just got a call at 12:00 AM EST saying Iām a finalist in āMicrosoft repair serviceā. I couldnāt tell because most of the call was in Chinese and sounded really robotic, but I think Iām in!
@lonepineman ?? Man, theyāve moved base from India to China, huh?
@NicoPlayWright Np, I hope it helped! Also, mood for Nanowrimo.
I hope Iām wrong as well, hehe.
Hi everyone! I ghosted this thread during the application period, and I just want to wish you all good luck! I applied in writing and Iāve been anxious all week!
Good luck to you too @bluets !! I forgot to mention I also applied in creative nonfiction, lol. It was kind of just for the sake of applying though, Iām not expecting much knowing how competitive YoungArts is with writing.
I applied in poetry! Hopefully we all get good news soon!
also, does anyone know what number they call from?
