Youngarts 2019-2020

I applied for the Novel category and I’m so nervous. Hopefully all the writing I have to do for NaNoWriMo will take my mind off of it though haha

@hihelloo The phone number is (305)-377-1140.

Does anyone know what day writing notifications are supposed to go out?

@writer333 everyone’s been saying that sometime later this week finalists will get a call and that honorable mention/merit people will get an email later.

@demosthenes_locke Thanks!

I wonder why they don’t just have a set date for notifications for each discipline. That would make people feel much better.

Does anyone know of any calls going out yet? I’m feeling really jumpy (clearly) because the timeline YA posted said that calls should’ve started on Friday… although it was “subject to change” (and I’m not sure how much it may be subject to change)

@DesiDancing I’m pretty sure most calls come out on the 14th/15th. Also, on November 8th, YA tweeted that they’d be coming out with results the following week (aka this week), so I doubt anyone’s gotten a call yet.

@bluets oh, thank you! I haven’t checked their twitter in a while, that was smart. The 14th feels so far away :neutral:

@DesiDancing yeah it does feel really far…:frowning:
You haven’t been checking their twitter? Am I the only one who has been obsessing over their twitter account for the past month, looking for any clues about notifications?
I think it’s starting to become a small problem, because even my friends, (I haven’t told them I entered in the competition yet) are noticing me jumping on my phone every 5 seconds.
I hope calls come out soon, or at least news of them.
Again, good luck to all of you guys! I hope we all end up making it, but if not there’s always next year, right?

So does anyone know how prestigious YoungArts is? Does being a winner help a lot with college apps?

@writer333

YoungArts is highly regarded by colleges. If you win any award, be sure to put it on your application, resume and mention it in interviews! They seem to know that only 10% of applicants are chosen, so it’s a pretty big deal. YoungArts sent press kit information before the Regional Week, so we shared the information and our local newspaper did a write-up of my daughter getting Honorable Mention in Popular Voice. She used the award/that article to bump up scholarship money at a few of the colleges she was accepted to, including the college she now attends.

Still no word on our end, but thinking end of the week so as to not stress too much. This is the final year she is eligible to apply and she is trying to be hopeful, but is very aware of the level of competition. When she attended the Regional Week she told me it was so humbling to have so much incredible talent around her. Everyone was super supportive of one another, rather than having a competitive vibe. They encourage social connections with many disciplines during the week, so she became close with visual arts and film winners, for example.

In addition to an amazing resume piece for colleges, YoungArts often has unique connections to jobs or opportunities. A representative from Nickelodeon attended the final show and asked my daughter to audition for a show pilot, which she did. She didn’t get the part but what a cool experience! I’m sure this applies to all the categories since established people involved in the arts are always looking for new, young talent in many fields. They know YoungArts has a great reputation. She was also invited to participate in workshops at Carnegie Hall and overseas music workshops throughout the year, but she had to decline due to her college schedule and cost.

Good luck everyone! Try to stay busy!

@AmyIzzy That’s amazing! Congratulations to your daughter, she must be incredibly talented and hard-working. Best of luck to her this year!

Any idea how YoungArts measures up to STEM competitions like RSI, Olympiads, and ISEF?

Wow, @AmyIzzy ! That’s so impressive about your daughter!

And wow to you as well, @bassman81 ! Did you get to go to a regional YoungArts?

It would be SUCH a dream come true for any of the applicant to be able to study with the professionals at any of the YoungArts week programs. They have such stellar faculty! Can you imagine getting to study with Joan Morgan for creative nonfiction? What an opportunity!

Best wishes to everyone here and fingers crossed!

@BookLvr Yes, I went to the New York one.

Thanks everyone! My daughter is definitely passionate and motivated when it comes to music and the arts! She applied to the popular voice, jazz voice and singer/songwriter categories this year.

@writer333

I’m not personally familiar with the STEM awards but I looked them up (See below) and they sound just as competitive as YoungArts, if not more! If you are in the running for these too, you must be talented on many levels! Good luck!

Center for Excellence in Education’s Research Science Institute (RSI):

Originally founded by Admiral H.G. Rickover, the Research Science Institute (RSI) is the most competitive STEM program available to high school students. Each year, the organization selects up to 80 students to participate in a six-week program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It’s completely free for students, and combines on-campus course work with off-campus work in science and research.

USA Olympiads:

Each year, hundreds of thousands of students across the globe participate in the Olympiads, a series of tournaments for STEM-focused subjects. After completing several rounds of exams, select students are chosen to attend a residential training program where they learn advanced concepts and lab skills. From those groups, students are selected to represent the United States at international competitions each summer. There are six USA Olympiads:

ISEF awards:

More than 600 individual and team awards are presented every year at the ISEF. Each entry is judged at least four times with category awards given in first, second, third and fourth place. Awards are $3,000, $1,500, $1,000 and $500 respectively in each of the 22 categories. The top winner of the ISEF receives the Gordon Moore Award, and $75,000, with the next top two winners each receiving a $50,000 award. Additional awards worth approximately $4 million are provided through the ISEF Special Awards program, and include tuition scholarships, summer internships, scientific field trips, and laboratory equipment.

Just a note that if you get an email saying that you won merit or Honorable Mention, there will be a link to express intetest in attending the regional week. You need to move quickly on that! My daughter called me first and was jumping for joy with her friend when she got the email so there was a slight hesitation in her clicking on the link. She did so within 3 minutes of getting the email but I was told she may have waited too long! So we were nervous she’d get to attend the Regional Week. She did get in but just letting you know to click the link first then celebrate since there are a limited number of spots!

Good luck to everyone!!

My D applied in Modern/Contemporary Dance. Hoping to get a winning call this week!! This process is nerve-wracking!

Hi all,

I DMed YoungArts on Instagram and here is what they had to say:

My message: Hi youngarts! Will the finalist calls start going out today? If not, when will they start? Thanks! (Sent yesterday, 11:45 A.M. EST)

Their response: Hi there! The Finalist notification process has begun and will continue through next week. (Replied today, 2:55 P.M. EST)

Hope this info helps.
