Your dream school versus your finances

ER,
A blast from the past! So good to hear that everything worked out at Vandy and that you’re doing so well. Best of luck at Google!

Maximus,
Google hires folks from UMCP, too – S met a couple who spent the summer in CA with their internship program. Helps that Sergei Brin went to UMCP – also the same double major!

ER – Great job and congrats on making the most of all of your opportunities!

Congrats and I would like to add that my school’s valedictorian two years ago chose Vanderbilt (and this is a school where number 7 went to stanford, etc).

CountingDown,

Yes Google does recruit at UMCP. His dad is still teaching Math at MD as well. It didn’t hurt that my S also entered MD with 58 credits as a true freshman. They are also, I believe, the only US university with a WYMAX installation.

If you search Classic CC, you can find ER’s OP on the subject (March 10, 2004):

thread title: **My college choices… **

Welcome back, ER. Thanks for updating us. Glad you’re continuing to do so well.

How do you search Classic CC?

If you scroll down at the very bottom of the page you will see College Discussion Classic, which you will find the older threads (~2004 and some older).

being able to search is not as easy as it is now, so you pretty much have to know what you are looking for.

do u plan on going back for a graduate degree oO

OP completed both his MS and BS degrees in Computer Science in 4 years @ Vandy.

ER, I wasn’t around when you were going through the decisions, but I loved reading your outcome. The fact that you embraced Vandy and found a great community is a terrific lesson to all.

I never knew vandy was good at CS :O

Hi Evil Robot! Nice to see you again. Thanks for the update, and best of luck in your new job!

Well in today’s world Yale’s fin aid would have probably been up to par…but nice job! (especially the turning down yale part lolz)

As one of those who advised you to go to Vandy, I am thrilled that things worked out so well! Congratulations on the Google job!

Congrats - and best of luck, good to hear the rest of the story from one of “our kids”.

E, I haven’t been around long, but enjoyed hearing your update. I have a nephew with a very similar story: University of Idaho grad with a dream job in robotics.

Congrats ER-Welcome Back. I was a newbie to CC and followed your drama closely. In fact, I nominated your CC “story” as one of the all time Epic stories, and probably contributed to my addiction to CC. I was so impressed with the overwhelming concern from the CC community, as they discussed the merits of your big decision. It was hot and heated at times- as it still is.

CBS Morning Show, just profiled Google as an outstanding company- showing footage of the free gourmet dining rooms , massage rooms, fitness center, volley ball courts, pool tables and recreational areas. Employees make their own daily work schedules, and the parking lot is 1/2 full at 9:30 AM.

Just amazing I just saw this profile Sunday morning, and now you post your update that you have ended up there! KUDOS- and continued happiness.

Great story that I can relate to!

My S is now working at Google’s Chicago office after graduating from U of Illinois in CS. He did great things at UIUC and had a good amount of scholarship money which pleased us also. He could have gone to a “bigger name” school (like UIUC, in the top 5 for CS)–but it wasn’t giving him any money.

I love these kinds of stories!

So glad to read this post, ER. You have been such a positive addition to the CC community. Best wishes as you settle into the “real world.”
