I still remember that show and I’ve seen U2 numerous times but at obviously larger venues. One of my sorority sisters introduced me to them and I’ve been a fan since then:)
I was able to attend the 1999 Rock and Roll hall of fame induction ceremony. That was the single greatest live show I have ever been to: Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, the Staples Singers, Curtis Mayfield, and Paul McCartney were among the inductees.
At the very end, all the singers there were on stage and launched into Let It Be, with Billy Joel on piano and everyone taking some lines.
It was a surreal night.
Since this thread is still going I’ll add another favorite. The Sound, an 80s post-punk band that probably didn’t get much airtime in the US.
The “Old Grey Whistle Test” seems to have a LOT of great participants.
And one more. Contemporary Jazz this time. This band is fabulous and Chris Potter is a beast on the saxophone. Have seen him at SFJazz many times and it’s always shear pleasure.
Wowser! This was just released by The Boss this week.
It’s Bruce Springsteen’s cover of the magnificent tribute song to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson “Nightshift” by The Commodores in the mid-1980s.
This is AMAZING. Well done, Boss:
(I know it’s probably not “live,” but what the heck…this is too good not to post!)
Phenomenal! Thanks for posting.
FYI: I changed the title of the thread to “your favorite LIVE moments” rather than “greatest”
Here’s another one from the super-great Stever Wonder.
Ok, hang on to your hats. This is “Superstition” on, of all places, Sesame Street!
Worth it for every second for a great song by an absolute master. And a really nice guy to boot:
Sadly, like many musical heartthrobs of youth, he has not aged well.
Bruce Springsteen was just live on Howard Stern on Monday. He’s 73 and I thought he looked great.
That could be a whole other thread!
Here’s Aerosmith from last month at their Las Vegas residency. I actually think Steven Tyler has aged well (he’s 74, and I fully admit that ‘aging well’ is pretty subjective), maybe I am giving him extra points because he’s lived this long and is still rocking. In all seriousness though, his voice sounds great.
He looks pretty darn good to me!
Me too! That bone structure, and the twinkle in the eye never grow old
Not a live performance but I enjoyed this CBS Sunday Morning chat with Bono:
Growing up, U2 was the first rock band that I saw live and I’ve been a fan ever since.
Bono was both the interview and musical guest on Stephen Colbert last night. Worth a watch if you can find the episode.
The best thing I have ever seen is Abba Voyage at the Abba Arena in London. In my mind it counts as a live show as Abba had so much involvement in the making of this concert and the back up band was live. It makes me question everything I see…. What is real and what is an illusion? This show is truly incredible.
