I'm humbled by the profiles of the entering class. Wouldn't it be fabulous to be surrounded by such accomplished classmates? My favorite is the boy from CT (probably Greenwich) who raised $17,000 for a trip to Tanzania. :D

i guess that’s what andover meant by “nice” :p

I would be more than “nice” if my parents are investment bankers or the first family, seriously.

I’m always cynical about fundraising ECs…did it involve more than walking to the family breakfast table and asking for money?

“Walking to the breakfast table”, that’s very funny, SVMom. :D

It would be ‘nice’ if Andover didn’t make their waitlist/denied applicants wait for days for a definitive answer. Surely, they have the in-house expertise to enable access to an on-line decision like other schools.

The philosophy here is that it’s a softer blow to receive paper denials/wait lists. At least if you don’t receive Andover mail for two days after March 10, you have an idea of what’s coming. However, if your decision is put online at the same time as everyone else’s is:

a) it makes it possible to check the decision at school which could either turn a kid into an unpleasant braggart for the rest of the day, or depress them to the point of tears

b) you have no idea what to expect when you open it, meaning if you’re a tad cocky you might just feel absolutely destroyed if your decision is anything but an acceptance.

Andover puts decisions online for international applicants, but only because international mail can be slow and/or unreliable. But I guarantee you that the reason Andover relies chiefly on paper mail is for consideration of the applicants. We’re hypersensitive here to applicants’ feelings, and we know how big a deal applying to boarding school can be.

Interesting to hear the rational, Tom, and I guess it might work in theory, but in reality:

1) Kids wait around all day for the magic Fed Ex truck to show up at their door; and
2) When they don’t get it, hope against hope that the truck got delayed by a blizzard (!)

I just can’t see how making kids wonder all day whether the truck is going to show up with their magic ticket is kinder than to email everyone and be done with it. Or send the fat and thin envelops at the same time. Or deal with the potential for braggarts or destroyed cocky types by waiting to post decisions in the early evening, when kids are home with their parents, like Groton does. No doubt Andover’s intentions are good, but I’m with Geducation–in practice, it just doesn’t come off as “nice”.

Most of the people are agonizing not knowing whether they are on a wl or denied despite Andover’s good intentions. I didn’t see braggarts or what not after we had the electronic decisions from Exeter and other schools. I hope A doesn’t feel like we are the 1000 lb gunga the gorilla in the room and not change the system that may be dated.

Haha. Do you think it’s a good idea to do a fundraiser like the ones on the site at this point? Lol it’s a funny idea (a waitlisted kid doing a fundraiser at that time… would it look nice or bad? Tough to say.)

Does anyone have a comment for this? Is it a good idea? Bad idea??

I think we all thought you were kidding…

I was, I just wanted to see what other thought on the matter.

I do have an actual quick question though… would it be wise to tell the admissions board that you would be happy being a day or boarding student, and that either one would be fine?

If you look at the fun facts, you know that chorloparta (sorry if I spelt it wrong) made Andover history (though she isn’t accepting their offer). Look down at the bottom of the fun facts to see what I mean :)

Hi everyone! I was accepted as a New Upper! PA class of 2013!
