I’m despondent about my scores…

Only my reading score went up 10 since january. I have 2180 superscored (71,77,70) and I’d really like to break 2200 but should I bother retaking it again?

@sally305: Well, remember that the writing MC counts for 70% of it and the essay only counts for 30%. I’m sure you’ve heard the controversies over the “reality TV prompt”. If he is struggling writing on ANY prompt, as in, he can’t write to random prompts (such as the reality TV prompt), then I’d have him practice all 10 of the writing prompts in the CollegeBoard SAT Prep Book, often nicknamed “the Blue Book”. Writing to a prompt, especially one he dislikes, is an important skill, even outside the SAT.

Regarding MC, I’d say you have to be careful! I went from a 690 to 770 in writing just by re-reading questions and being more careful! Make sure he knows common idioms (you can google “SAT idioms”) and also commonly seen comparisons (than vs. then, effect vs. affect). One last tip is that remember that there is that “no error” option. Try not to use that option TOO often or not often enough. It’s usually a 1 in 5 chance, so there usually are 2-3 “no errors” on the Writing MC–that’s it! No guarantees, obviously, but a general rule is that if you have 5+ “no errors”, you might want to re-read those questions to make sure they truly are no errors!

CR - 740
Math - 760
Writing - 760 (Essay - 8)

2260!!!

So happy. Very good curve. Writing curve especially, probably cause the topic was so hard.

Taking this again in May, and then ACT in June. Hopefully I’ll be finished by the end of June.

@hardworking21,

Thank you so much for your reply. No, I hadn’t heard about any controversy over the essay but my son (who is not into reality TV at all) thought it was dumb when he took it and knew he had done poorly. A few of his friends also seemed disappointed with their performance…but then reading this board, plenty of other kids did fine.

I think this has been a wakeup call for him. He is someone who prides himself on being able to “wing it” and do well. We will shift into ACT mode now and sign up to retake the SAT in June or September.

Took first SAT and bombed the CR section. Any advice on improving next time around?

thanks

First read the questions before you get into passage analyses, and mark any line quotations. Then as you read the passage and reach an area you marked, go back and answer the question. This helps reduce confusion with other sections of the passage.

Also, keep in your mind that the answer is ALWAYS STATED in the passage in some way or form. The correct answer for any question will never be beyond what is said in the passage.

800 writing section with a 9 essay ahahaha

i got a 680 on math, 800 on critical reading, 800 on writing (10/12 on that stupid reality tv essay) for a grand total of 2280

should i retake? i’m looking at schools like columbia, yale, stanford, and princeton, so i know my scores probably should be better; i’d like to break 2300
is that stupid? should i just be glad i got really good reading/writing scores and move on, or should i try to bring up my math grade?

800 CRITICAL READING!!! 770 MATH 790 WRITING. For me, CR was all that mattered <3

amaninakupenda–i would say your score is awesome because just looking at the 2280 it is! but it’s definitely lopsided…considering the schools you’re looking at, if you’re planning on studying english or history or anything that’s not related to math or science, i’d say there’s no need to take it again. but if you wanna study math or any sciences, you should probably try to raise that math score.
