Let me see, prior to this year, I knew nothing of the AIME/USAMO style maths. Now I'm set to go to the USAMO pretty much for sure. This has been a big accomplishment for me as I love math, and this is more "true" to the nature of mathematics than any other math I have done.

i was praying to be a semifinalist in the siemens-westinghouse competition, but I became a finalist. yay!

Good job, what was your topic?

I got 107% in my global studies class in freshman year.

but that was the worst class I have ever had.

well i guess my whole life is surrounded by the whole mist of the immigrant success story... came here with my parents in 1993 (i was 6) with about $50-100 bucks. Parents didn't have college education at all, mom baby sat for minimum wage, dad washed dishes for minimum wage. We lived on top of my grandpa's pizza store with my cousin's family in a single room separated by a curtain. I went to a crappy elementary school and things were looking down for us (i didnt know the language, the culture, the lifestyle... and my parnets had no direction... my dad was a fish farmer in china and my mom made jackets). Then, my parents somehow pulled together and got through all of the hardships. I picked up in school (dominated kids in mathematics and picked up english very quickly) and i'm now easily top 10-15 out of the class of 800 at my high school. My dad became a car mechanic, worked through some community college classes and passed all of the ASE Masters Technician and Smog Check Technician requirements (these are VERY VERY hard tests.... about 145134019238 times harder without knowing english) and we saved enough money to buy a store. Now, my dad's store is flourishing and we bought a house in the hills.

I guess thats kinda long, but i guess its more or less the story of my life.

now HERE's a good success story (he's actually an CCer)

Heres my story...went from a 3.4 weighted average in freshman to straight A's in soph and junior year.
went from a loser to winner after freshman year because of the grades and now, i am awaiting decisions from UCLA, UC Berk, and UC SD and UC irvine.

I failed math in 8th grade, got a D in science and a bunch of C's everywhere else. My only A in an academic class was English.

9th grade I made straight A's. I still couldn't tell you how it happened. I think I was just lazy. I suppose it's good that I started doing well at the right time...
