Zoology?

Hello,

I am a senior in high school, and just got accepted to the state university in my hometown that I will be attending.

What I am curious about is my choices for majors.

I know, I know, med school does not care what you major in and no major will "truly" prepare you 100% better than any other. I get that. I am just curious if it would be difficult to double major in zoology (a specialty of biology at my uni) and psychology. I have a passion for both, and know I could do very well in both. Doing the premed prereqs alone would nearly qualify me for a bio degree anyway, so I'm not sure.

Any input?

go for it. Doesn’t sound like a killer combo by any means

It’s a great combination—lots of overlap in certain areas of interest.

No reason not to. Double if you want.

But fwiw, I had an interesting conversation with a Uni president last week, and his comment was that he would prefer to see students complete an honor thesis – going deep into one subject – as opposed to going for breadth, i.e., double major. Just one President’s opinion, and not sure if professional schools would care.

I do not think that it will be difficult. My D. is zoology major and almost has completed her Neuroscience minor (no psych. minor in her school). She had to drop it because of additional requirements at one of Med. Schools that she is applying. Zoology and neuroscience overlap. In addition, D. has Music Composition minor that she will be able to complete. I would estimate that her load of major/2 minors was about the same as double major. It depends on school, though. D. is also graduating from state school.

Seems pointless to me.

Either way, it’s not like you have to decide now. Wait until after you’ve got a semester or two of college under your belt. You’ll be able to judge the feasibility and practicality of a double major much better at that point.

It is pointless if person has no interest in either major or one of them. But what if he/she is really passionately interested in 2 or even 3. Why not pursue interest while it is affordable? This was the reason for my D. started out with 2 minors, she had no other reasons. No regrets on her part, loved all her classes, she is graduating in May and going to Med. School next year. Then she will not have time for anything else, she is aware of it. UG is the time to pursue various interests, whatever makes you happy.
