09 Residences?

yes!

i don't think i could have made that up... i didn't even know champlin hall existed before i opened the letter. :D nor did i know that my roommate's from switzerland... nor did i know that "First-year students should arrive on Tuesday, August 30, 2005". in fact, now i'm just totally confused whether we should get there on tuesday or wednesday, i'll call as we get closer...

but seriously. has anyone posting on this board been inside champlin hall? is it any good?

^^ Sounds promising though.

I don't trust anything from livejournal. It reeks of emo.

This is what MoatToMoat said about it in his thread...

MoChamp: Combination of Morris and Champlin dorms. Big rooms and semi-private bathrooms (each two rooms share one bathroom) which is really nice. Attached to V-Dub and sateillite fitness center so you never have to leave to work out or eat. On Pembroke campus.

sounds good :)

What day did you get the BDH? I got mine yesterday, I am hoping that means I can expect my room tomorrow. Btw, sounds like you have a pretty good place to live.

Agh, I was planning on going Aug 30 anyway because my mom can't take off the 31st and she wants to come with my dad to see me off.

:D That just got me excited.

i got east andrews hall :( not a lot of first years in those.

i would kill to live in andrews. apparently that's where they house all the children of VIPs and you have your own sink and medicine cabinet in each room and rooms are apparently fairly large. lucky!!

I lived in East Andrews last year, and it's great!!!! What room are you in; I was in room 146. The rooms are big, many have walk-in closets, and you get your own sink! It does have the nickname "hotel Andrews" for a reason.

I know you don't want to hear from a mother but would rather hear from actual Brown students, but I'll chime in anyway. My daughter was a freshman last year in Morris Hall. Morris is attached to Champlin and both dorms are VERY similar. She loved her dorm. Some things to mention....the room was about 14" by 16", definitely felt pretty spacious for a dorm double. Each person had wooden modern furniture....a closet armoire thing (like a closet that is a piece of furniture that is IN the room), a low dresser, a bed, a wooden desk with a shelf above it....these pieces could all be moved any way you wanted. There is a pretty big double window. Two rooms that are next to each other share a private bathroom so that means only four people share what is like a normal bathroom, not a group lavoratory, so that is really nice. Those two rooms also share a closet for storage right by their doors. In my D's case, the kitchen, sitting area and laundry was right across the hall from her room (I really think there is one of these on every floor). Another great thing....the entire dorm is not that big and most of it is freshmen but the suites on the end of each hallway are upper classmen. But the freshmen in the dorm (just talking Morris but this is the same for Champlin) form what is called a "unit" and the unit was maybe fifty people, I think. The unit bonded really tightly and that made living there just very nice. They sometimes did stuff together or ate together and this was starting right during orientation. Also, on the first floor of Morris is a very big lounge that you could hang out in to study, whatever. The cafeteria (the V Dub) is adjacent to these dorms and that means you do not have to go outside to get to it! Kinda nice in the morning. Also, there is now a satellite gym that is adjacent to this set of dorms. A great thing was the location. It is on the Pembroke campus (a group of dorms, including Andrews) that is just mere steps off Thayer Street which is where all the shops and cafes and stuff are located. At least with Morris, you stepped right out of the dorm and were practically on Thayer Street. Also, if you do any athletics or use the main athletic facilities, it is not as far of a walk from these dorms as it is from the ones on the main Brown campus. Also, just so you know, even though it is the Pembroke "campus", we're talking about four blocks or so from the main greens, very insignificant distance, five minutes. For a freshmen, it surely was a neat place to be. My daughter has opted to live in Wriston Quad next year even though she loved the Pembroke campus. She said it was great for freshman year but that for next year, Wriston and the area on that end of campus was appealing for a sophomore.

Hope that helps even though I was not the one to live there but I saw it and I surely heard the positive feedback. Good rooms, bathrooms, close knit dorm, fun location off Thayer...

Susan

morris! I kinda wanted perkins but I'm more than ok with big rooms and private bathrooms.

soozievt, thanks for the detailed description.

thanks soozievt!

so all the freshmen in champlin are in a single unit? it's smaller than i thought then... not that i mind :)

also, are the rooms carpeted?

actually, floors one and two of mo-champ (morris-champlin as it's commonly refered to) are a unit, and floors three and four are another

You know I think only the people from Andrews and Morris-Champlin are getting ther info apparently..

Hmm Pembrooke doesn't seem quite the social part of campus according to reviews :</p>

The rooms were not carpetted. My daughter is asleep right now (she is actually home finally for one month, the only time all year) but I assumed all of Morris was one freshman "unit". I really don't think Morris has first floor rooms, just second, third, and fourth. The first floor is a huge lounge area.

As far as social life, I just know she had PLENTY of it, even in Morris. They go all over campus to do social stuff. Also, the dorm itself was very social and very close. There is also a casual place to eat on campus near this dorm that is open late...called the Gate. Basically there is a group of dorms on the Pembroke campus and then another group near Wriston Quad and near Keany Quad...kinda two ends of the campus...plus other dorms scattered about. So, it is not as if Morris Champlin is isolated at all from other dorms....there is a group of them and a big cafeteria in this area. Also, while Morris is not that big itself, it is connected to Champlin and I know my D had friends in Champlin and it was as if they lived in the same dorm...just down another corridor. All I know is that my D talked a lot about how social and how close and bonded her entire dorm unit was. So don't worry on the social front. Besides, all of your social life does not revolve around just your dorm. She had more social life at Brown than she ever had in HS. She had a GREAT time in her first year there. I'm sure you guys will love it. It is a great place to be.

Susan

I asked my daughter about the unit for Morris. I was correct. Morris Hall has its own unit that is made up of ALL of Morris which is floors two, three, and four and is not combined with floors of Champlin. She said to tell you guys who got Morris that the "RC" which I think might stand for Resident Counselor, for next year, named Stefan, is very cool.

Susan

Sorry for the misinformation. I assumed that mo-champ worked the same way as em-wool. There (where the dorms are basically the same as mo-champ, the units were by the floors, the way I mentioned earlier.

James, no problem!

I only shared this stuff because I know how "hungry" incoming freshmen are for this kind of information. I have another daughter about to be a college freshman at another school and I wish we could get any information on her room set up, etc.

Susan

I want my housing stuff!! :( Tomorrow?

I got 'HOTEL' West Andrews Hall. :)
Somebody please tell me what West Andrews Hall's like!?

I'm in Bronson, which I think is on Keeney Quad
