Alright so I’m having some trouble with my schedule this year. I’ve heard that 7-8 AP classes is recommended for good colleges and I’ll be a sophomore in the fall. Freshman year I had taken AP Human Geo and will take ONLY AP World History as a sophomore. I’ve heard much controversy on taking AP Bio and my school has a very low success rate with that class so I’ve decided on not taking it. Since these two years I only plan on taking 2 AP classes, I’ve briefly planned the classes I will be taking for the rest of my high school career. FYI, I plan on applying to NYU, UCLA, University of Texas, and Texas Tech. Here are the classes I plan on taking, please leave any advice on if this variety of classes would be ideal.
9th grade: AP HUG, Honors Bio, Honors English 1, Honors Algebra, Honors Spanish, Honors Art 1, Novice Debate
10th grade: WHAP, Honors Chemistry, Honors Geometry, Honors English 2, Yearbook Staff, Debate, Aerobics, Honors Spanish 2. Dual Credit - Spanish 3
11th grade: AP CHEM, APUSH, AP English, Honors Physics, Honors Algebra 2, Debate, AP Psychology, Dual Credit - Macroecon
12th grade: AP Calc, AP English, AP Psychology, Debate
Dual Credit: Principles of Accounting
With these classes, do I have a good chance in getting into these schools? Please help
It’s fine.
Many high schools limit the APs freshman and sophomores can take, for a good reason - they are supposed to be equivalent to college courses. Few underclassmen ever take an AP other than APHUG or APWH. There is no reason to take an AP course as a sophomore simply to check a box. Aside from that, I’m a big believer that one should get the intro core sciences out of the way (perhaps OK to double up with a concurrent AP science as a junior) before tackling APs. So your strategy of taking chem next year in lieu of AP Bio makes sense.
I’ll assume you made a typo by listing AP Psych in both junior and senior years.
The schedule is fine. Nobody can say more without SAT/ACT scores and GPA
Yes, I would just like to take AP Psychology as a senior. But would you recommend taking AP Bio as a sophomore or waiting until Junior year to take AP Chem or AP Physics instead?
It’s 7-8 TOTAL, with some “core” AP’s preferably.
9th grade: AP HUG, Honors Bio, Honors English 1, Honors Algebra, Honors Spanish, Honors Art 1, Novice Debate
10th grade: WHAP, Honors Chemistry, Honors Geometry, Honors English 2, Yearbook Staff, Debate, Aerobics, Honors Spanish 2. Dual Credit - Spanish 3 ← Dual Credit Spanish 2 is equivalent to HS level 3 so you’d need to take Dual Credit Spanish 2 over the summer
11th grade: AP CHEM, APUSH, AP English, Honors Physics, Honors Algebra 2, Debate, Dual Credit - Macroecon Dual Credit Spanish 3
12th grade: AP Calc, AP English, AP Psychology, Debate
Dual Credit: Principles of Accounting ← not sure it’s a good idea. Unlike HS accounting, which is basically bookkeeping and an easy vocational class, Accounting in college is very rigorous and may even be weedout. Furthermore, it counts as an elective. If you want something economics related, take Dual Credit Microeconomics AND Dual credit Introduction to Business or Principles of business or whatever the college lists as the first business course.
So, 12th grade: AP Calc, AP English, AP Psychology, Debate, APES, Dual Credit Microeconomics, Dual Credit Intro to business
I would not suggest taking AP Bio was a sophomore. Take Honors Chem as a sophomore. @MYOS1634 suggestion above is a good one.
