I’ve never taken AP classes before, so let me know if Im going to crazy with the AP Classes. How much AP Classes should I take? Also, why is AP Euro (the hardest class in my school) so hard? I’m planning on taking that class, debating if I should take that or Sociology Honors
I’m 100% taking AP Bio, but I don’t know about AP Chem. It’s the second hardest class in my school and its a 2 hour class. Should I take AP Bio and AP Chem? Many of my friends have told me that I shouldn’t take both in the same year. I’ve gotten B’s in Biology and Chemistry before without ever studying, and they were honor level classes. I’ve been told I’m really good at science.
Here’s how my schedule would look for the whole year.
With AP Chem:
AP Bio
AP Chem
AP English Lit/comp
PE (required)
AP Gov
PreCalc Honors
Without AP Chem: (There’s more classes because AP Chem is worth 2 credits).
AP Bio
AP English Lit/Comp
PE (required)
AP Gov
PreCalc Honors
AP Euro or Sociology Honors
AP Psych
If I were to take Sociology instead of AP Euro, it would work well with AP Psych since they teach similar content.
So, what do you guys think? If I were to take AP Chem and AP Bio, perhaps I should replace AP English with English honors and replace AP Euro with Sociology Honors? I don’t know. I’m really trying to impress colleges and boost up my GPA, but I also would much rather have 3’s, 4’s, or 5’s on my AP exams rather than have 1’s or 2’s.
I also have a 3.1 GPA unweighted, and I have a chance to boost it up this year to a 3.3 unweighted, or if a miracle happens, a 3.4 GPA unweighted. So I think I really do need to impress colleges in my senior year. Sadly though, the 3.3 or 3.4 GPA will be on my college applications since I’d have to send in my transcript before my senior semester 1 ends.
Colleges won’t be ‘impressed’ by a student who suddenly takes lot of AP classes senior year.
AP bio and AP chemistry are two if the most time intensive classes, they should NOT be taken together.
Since you’ve never taken AP 's, limit yourself to 2.
AP psychology goes well with sociology so that’s one. Then one more of your choices, and everything else honors + PE.
I agree with @MYOS1634 in that I would only take 2 AP’s. Senior year 1st semester is only 1/7 of you current overall GPA, so it will not have as much as an impact on your admission chances. Yes, doing well in a rigorous course load Senior year will help but if you take on too much you risk the chance you may not do well in all of these classes. All admission decisions are provisional so you want to make sure that you do well Senior year so No D’s or F’s which could result in you being rescinded.
@MYOS1634 So are you suggesting me to take AP Bio and AP Psychology as my only AP classes? I was kind of hoping to take AP English, but I’m kind of weak in analysis. I also want to take AP Gov since I’m good in politics and I heard it’s an easy class.
So what do you think? Should I take AP English and AP Gov along with AP Bio and AP Psych? Or should I not take AP English and AP Gov, or should I choose between AP English and AP Gov?
I’m suggesting you take AP Psychology and either AP English OR AP Bio. I think that would be plenty of challenge since you’re getting B’s in Honors classes and you don’t want AP to kick your butt (it’s harder than Honors, that’s why a B in Honors is weighted the same as a C+/B- in AP: it’s that much harder.)
You could tae AP Psych, AP Bio, and AP Gov, but it’d be really hard - and you’d have a hidden extra class, “college applications”, on top of everything.
@MYOS1634 Alright. So my schedule will probably look like this after I meet with my counselor.
AP Bio
PreCalc Honors
AP Psychology
PE
English 4 Honors
Art
Sociology Honors
Semester 1 Electives: Art (required) and Sociology Honors
Semester 2 Electives: Medicine
I want a career in medicine when I head off to college, so that’s why I’m too reluctant to remove AP Bio and Medicine off my schedule. But obviously, the Medicine class will be taught at the high school level.
‘Medicine’ will have nothing to do with what you do as a premed in college.
Being premed just means taking 2 biology classes with majors and ranking with the best of them, 5 chemistry classes and doing better than the best of them, one calculus class with math majors and doing better than them, etc.
However taking AP bio will help you so keep it.
As a junior who has already taken AP BIo and Chem, I think it’s a wise idea just to focus on 2-3 APs. Don’t take too many AP classes if you’re just trying them out for the first time. Choose 3-5 “heavy” academic classes and fill the other spots with electives you can do well in. AP Bio is very reading/memorizing/concept heavy. Chem is also pretty concept heavy and there’s a good amount of math. Personally I think AP Bio and Chem were drastically harder than normal bio/chem.
I’m taking Honors Physics right now, and I had an A last semester. I hate Physics, though. @bopper
I want to major in Medicine, but the thing is, I heard medical school doesn’t accept AP credit. I’ll just take AP Bio to get my feet wet for college. But basically I can get any credit for any AP class for college.
@MYOS1634 So I shouldn’t take Medicine as an elective? I have the option to either take Medicine or Anatomy/Physiology. In medicine class, we just learn the responsibilities of being a doctor and we visit multiple hospitals to see how things work. Then, we talk to doctors, do math that we have to deal with in medicine, etc.
@katsudonikon Yeah AP Bio is a very difficult AP class I heard. I’m ditching AP English so I can focus more on AP Bio next year. Instead of AP English, I’ll just take Honors English
Yes, premeds take AP bio in order to master the basics and spend College Bio 1 refining what they know, to have the strongest possible foundation.
You can take Medicine as an elective, absolutely. It won’t 'help’ypu with premed or medium school but it sound like a well thought out program with exposure to hospitals so it could understand help you understand the health professions.
Alright, I met with my counselor. I told her the AP classes I want are AP Bio, AP Psych, and AP Gov/Politics. AP Gov is the easiest AP in my school; I spoke to the AP teacher. Plus, I have a good knowledge of the politics and the system of the government.
I’m kind of worried though. I feel like I shouldn’t take AP Psych because I’m already taking AP Bio. Both classes have a lot to deal with memorization. What do you guys think? Should I drop AP Psych? The deadline for registering for classes next year is this Friday. @bopper@MYOS1634@Gumbymom@katsudonikon
