1 D...am I screwed?

I got into Notre Dame and I just found out that I'm getting a D in AP Calc. I'm an intended poli science/history major. I'm going to be getting a B in another class but the rest should be A's...I'm going to try and see if I can work something out with the teacher but as of now, my grade is a D. Am I going to get rescinded? I've always had B's and even a C my junior year in AP Chem and I still managed to garner an acceptance. I was just terrible at this class...what do I do?

Only excuse I have is that I’m truly bad at this class…I tried online videos, peer tutoring, and private tutoring but I could never really do this stuff…

To note, it says that “A significant decline in your academic or personal record, or a failure in one of the academic units required for admission to Notre Dame, will result in another evaluation of your status and a possible withdrawal of our offer of admission” in my admissions packet…I’m not sure if it’s that much of a decline and I don’t think D counts as failing…

I’m almost positive they won’t rescind your admission. AP Calc is a hard class and it’s a D, not an F. So if your other grades are as you say they are, I can’t see that happening.

Hmm, this makes me a little more optimistic…I was gonna try and get a C and drop the class so I could do independent study with my teacher, essentially self-studying AP Comparative Government and AP Latin Vergil…two subjects that I’m inifitely more interested in but I’m not sure what to do now. I can’t handle calc-related stress. Would dropping it, even though I have little interest and I have credit and all that stuff, be detrimental as well?

Bump! More help would be much loved.

Haha, thanks for putting it like that. I was pretty aggravated when I posted this but now I’m fine. My projected senior uw gpa is 3.17 and weighted is like 4.17. It’s only going to cause my overall unweighted to go from 3.82 to 3.73 and weighted to go from 4.227 to 4.2. Hope that counts for something.

Is this a final first semester grade or your current second semester grade?

Final first semester grade.

Any more help would be awesome!

the people that know the answer are in admissions at Notre Dame, not here on the forum. Why not call them and ask? Maybe they’ll even say its not important and put your mind at ease.

If you got a D they’re going to find out eventually, it isn’t like if you don’t bring it up they’ll never notice. Colleges like maturity and students that face their problems head-on. Calling or emailing shows this, and furthermore if there is some way to work it out by taking a summer school class or something else this next semester, now is the time to find out. If you wait until August for them to get your final transcripts it will be too late, and another strike against you will be that you clearly knew about the issue since February but did nothing.

Mikemac, I did call and ask and they said that one blunder such as this demands an explanation but overall, I should be okay…It sounded like I’d be okay according to them.

I did call them and explained to them the entire situation…the admission counselor told me that I simply hit the limits of my mathematical abilities and that I should do what’s best for me (I asked if I could drop). Currently, midyears are being sent out this week and my teacher said that he’ll consider bumping me up but I’m still waiting for that decision…I’m just worried if dropping will be bad too…I’ll probably be adding another independent study – AP Comparative government (I already did add one but I want one more – AP World History).

Bro don’t sweat it I have a C- in Calc too, it’ll be ok. They know that it’s a hard class.

Wait, is that your final grade for the class or just your mid-year grade? Because I’ve never heard of a college rescinding admission on the basis of mid-year grades. If you can bring it up for the final grade then it shouldn’t be a problem.

If that is your final grade then you should be careful in your other classes this year but if Nortre Dame says you’ll be fine, then you should be all right.

Sorry to bring this back up but I was curious…btw, I’m not getting rescinded, thankfully. Anyway, I applied to Davidson, Colgate, Bowdoin, USC, and Bowdoin, and I was wondering if this one D, and the fact that I dropped the class (even though I added two independent studies), would keep me out of the colleges. Contextually, I’m still in the top 5%, and I have accomplished a few things recently, such as qualifying to state sci fair again, and placing at the regional Mock Trial competition, and some other stuff…I know colleges are holistic about this type of stuff. I’m just wondering if my extracurriculars and essays are good enough to put me over.

Btw, my gpa is like 3.8 uw and 4.2 w…and my class size is over 600.

Bumppppp!!
